Cult Records is an independent record label founded by Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes) in 2009. Initially used as an imprint for Casablancas' solo releases, Cult later became a standalone label, and in June 2014 entered a label services agreement with Kobalt as well as a digital distribution agreement with ONErpm. Julian Casablancas
Julian Fernando Casablancas (born August 23, 1978) is an American singer, musician and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of Rock music, rock band The Strokes, with whom he has released six studio albums since their founding in 1998. Casablancas released a solo album, ''Phrazes for the Young'', in 2009. That same year, he founded the Independent record label, independent record label Cult Records, which has represented artists such as The Growlers, Rey Pila and Karen O. Since 2013, he has been the frontman of experimental rock band The Voidz. The band has released two albums, ''Tyranny (The Voidz album), Tyranny'' (2014) and ''Virtue (The Voidz album), Virtue'' (2018). ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. It has since expanded and covers all kinds of music, including pop. Pitchfork was sold to Condé Nast in 2015, although Schreiber remained its editor-in-chief until he left the website in 2019. Initially based in Minneapolis, Pitchfork later moved to Chicago, and then Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Its offices are currently located in One World Trade Center alongside other Condé Nast publications. The Virgins
The Virgins were an American indie rock band formed in 2006 in New York City. The band split up in November 2013. History 2006–2007: Formation Frontman Donald Cumming began writing music by himself in his New York apartment. He then recruited friends to fill out the band. Almost immediately they made a five-song EP titled '' The Virgins '07'', compiled of the band's early recordings, and songs Donald had already recorded himself. Upon completion, Cumming passed out the EP to friends and DJs causing the music to pervade the New York club scene. Soon after, the demo came across Atlantic Records who signed Cumming before the band was fully formed. Surfbort
Surfbort is an American punk rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2015. They were featured in a campaign by Gucci, and members of Blondie have named the band as a favorite of theirs. They have released music with Cult Records and Slope Records. Biography Surfbort was formed in 2014 by lead singer Dani Miller when she was at a gig looking for acts to perform. The group got their name from the Beyoncé song "Drunk in Love." They began releasing music with the single "Trash" in 2015, followed by their self-titled debut EP on Slope Records. Texan Sean Powell joined the band on drums in sept 2015. In Feb 2016 the original guitarist Matt Picola left the band and Powell asked fellow Texan Alex Kilgore to come in on guitar. Songhoy Blues
Songhoy Blues is a desert blues music group from Timbuktu, Mali. The band was formed in Bamako after being forced to leave their homes during the civil conflict and the imposition of Sharia law. The band released its debut album, ''Music in Exile'', via Transgressive Records on February 23, 2015, while Julian Casablancas' Cult Records partnered with Atlantic Records to release the album in North America in March 2015. The group is one of the principal subjects of the documentary film ''They Will Have To Kill Us First''. Jehnny Beth (born Camille Berthomier, 24 December 1984), is a French musician, singer-songwriter, producer, presenter and actress, best known as half of the duo John & Jehn and front woman of the English rock band Savages. Inheaven were an English four-piece alternative band from South London. Formed in 2014, the band released their first single "Regeneration" in 2015 via Julian Casablancas' label Cult Records. The single was supported by BBC Radio 1/BBC6 Music DJs Annie Mac, Phil Taggart, Steve Lamacq and Chris Hawkins. The band were featured in ''DIY'' and XFM's ones to watch for 2016 with ''NME'' heralding them "one of the UK’s most exciting new bands". The band also topped ''DIY''s readers poll in 2016 coming in first place for Track of the Year, second for band of the year and fourth best live act of the year. The Cribs
The Cribs are a British indie rock band originally from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, that formed in 2001. The band consists of twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross Jarman. They were subsequently joined by ex-The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr who was an official member of the group from 2008 until 2011. The band, who first became active on the concert circuit in 2002, were initially tied to other like-minded UK bands of that time, most notably The Libertines, by a British music press that were looking for a 'British rearguard' to the wave of popular US alternative rock bands of the time. Ryan Jarman
Ryan James Jarman is a British musician who is the guitarist and vocalist with English lo-fi indie rock band the Cribs. The Cribs Jarman formed the Cribs in the early 2000s with his twin brother Gary and younger brother Ross. The band is known for their short, punchy tunes with pop riffs and a lo-fi sound – influenced by bands like Huggy Bear, Comet Gain and Beat Happening. The Cribs have released six albums on the Wichita label, the first two being ''The Cribs'' (produced by Ed Deegan and Bobby Conn), and ''The New Fellas'' (produced by Edwyn Collins, singer in influential indie band Orange Juice).
