Cuanza Sul Province
Cuanza Sul Province ("South Cuanza River, Cuanza"; Umbundu: Kwanza Kombuelo Volupale) is a Provinces of Angola, province of Angola. It has an area of and a population of 1,881,873. Sumbe is the capital of the province. Don founded the province in 1769 as Novo Redondo. History The province was badly affected during the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002). A large number of civilians were killed in the clashes between UNITA, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and Angolan Armed Forces (FAA). Coffee plantations and fields were destroyed. Frequent attacks forced people to leave their municipalities. UNITA had opened its central front in the province. Around 116,000 displaced people were living in camps. The majority of them were from the rural areas and the densely populated plateau regions. Gabela, Angola
Gabela is a town, with a population of 116,903 (2014), and a commune, named Gabela Sede, in the municipality of Amboim, province of Cuanza Sul, Angola and the seat of that municipality. The area of the commune comprises 459 km2 with a population of 184,723. It was founded as ''N'Guebela'' on September 28, 1907. Around the town, some areas of the Angolan Scarp savanna and woodlands with its unique plants and animals are still to be found. The Gabela akalat (''Sheppardia gabela''), a species of bird, was first recorded here by scientists and subsequently named after the town, as were the Gabela helmet-shrike (''Prionops gabela'') and Gabela bush-shrike (''Laniarius amboimensis''); these endangered species are only found in the uplands near Gabela. Porto Amboim
Porto Amboim is a port town in Cuanza Sul Province, Angola with a population of 65,000; it comprises an area of 4,638 km. In the past Porto Amboim was connected by an isolated 123 km narrow gauge railway to Gabela, albeit closed in 1987 due to the civil war and to the abandonment of most coffee plantations, the biggest source of revenue from Gabela. Originally Porto Amboim was known as Kissonde, a small village later colonized in 1587 by the Portuguese naming it Benguela and later Benguela Velha (Old Benguela) due to the creation of another village today known as Benguela located 350 km south of Benguela Velha.
