Crunt
Crunt was an alternative rock band, active from 1993 to 1995. Formed when all three members were living in Seattle, the band included Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland and Stuart Gray, who were married during the band's career. Bjelland considered the band something of a side project from her main output and drummer Russell Simins was also a member of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Gray had previously been in Salamander Jim and Lubricated Goat prior to the formation of the band. In February 1993, the band wrote a number of songs and the same month entered the studio to record their first and only album, the self-titled ''Crunt''. Though the album's recording and production were short, the album was not released until a year later in February 1994. After the album's release, the band had plans for a full tour in order to promote the album, however, no such tour eventuated. ''Crunt'' is a studio album by the American band Crunt, released in 1994. It was the band's only album. An estimated 20,000 copies had been sold worldwide as of January 1995. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' called it an "enthusiastic if offhand outing," while acknowledging Simins's "typically muscular contribution." Stephen Howell, in his AllMusic review, wrote: "Crunt proves that three chords and a childish mentality can be taken a long way. This is simplistic rock & roll that manages to create a fast and memorable hook for anyone within earshot." Kat Bjelland
Katherine Lynne Bjelland (born December 9, 1963) is an American musician. She rose to prominence as the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the alternative rock band Babes in Toyland, which she formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1987. She has been noted for her unusual vocal style alternately consisting of shrill screams, whispering, and speaking in tongues, as well as for her guitar playing style, which incorporates "jagged" tones with "psychotic rockabilly rhythms". Born in Salem, Oregon, Bjelland was raised in nearby Woodburn, and learned to play guitar as a teenager from her uncle, with whom she performed in his band shortly after graduating high school. Upon dropping out of the University of Oregon at age nineteen, Bjelland relocated to Portland, where she became involved in the city's punk rock scene. Stu Spasm
Stuart Gray (born 1961), better known by his moniker Stu Spasm, is an Australian musician and composer best recognized as the frontman for the experimental noise rock outfit Lubricated Goat. Biography Spasm (Gray) commenced his musical journey in Adelaide, South Australia. A devotee of Adelaide’s bourgeoning Punk scene, Spasm worked hard on his guitar playing, developing a New York Dolls/Johnny Thunders repertoire. His first band named Exhibit A played primarily covers sourced from the Dolls, MC5, Birdman and other east coast US artists. Spasm had already displayed a canny understanding of “who could be of help” before leaving for Sydney. Lubricated Goat are an Australian noise rock band which originally formed in 1986 by multi-instrumentalist Stu Spasm. They achieved brief notoriety in November 1988 for appearing nude on the ABC TV program ''Blah Blah Blah'', wearing only their instruments and shoes. Mainly influenced by the Stooges and the Birthday Party, they are credited for playing a grimy, confrontational style of rock, which preceded grunge. Babes in Toyland was an American alternative rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1987. The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Kat Bjelland, along with drummer Lori Barbero and bassist Michelle Leon, who was later replaced by Maureen Herman in 1992. Babes in Toyland released three studio albums: ''Spanking Machine'' (1990), followed by the commercially successful ''Fontanelle'' (1992), and ''Nemesisters'' (1995), before becoming inactive in 1997 and eventually disbanding in 2001. In 2014, the band reunited, and the following year began performing live together for the first time in over a decade. The group consisted of Judah Bauer on guitar, backing vocals, harmonica and occasional lead vocals, Russell Simins on drums and Jon Spencer on vocals, guitar and theremin. Their musical style is largely rooted in rock and roll although it draws influences from punk, blues, garage, rockabilly, soul, noise rock, rhythm and blues and hip hop.
