The Crunchyroll Anime Award for Anime of the Year is the highest award given at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards since its 1st Crunchyroll Anime Awards, inaugural edition in 2017. It is given for the best anime series from the previous year. Winners are determined through a combined voting process by judges and public voting. ''Yaoi'' sports anime ''Yuri on Ice'' by MAPPA first won the award in 2017. In 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, its latest edition, the award was won by the Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, second season of ''Jujutsu Kaisen (TV series), Jujutsu Kaisen'' by MAPPA, which also became the first anime to win the top prize twice. MAPPA received ten nominations and three wins for the award, the most of any studio to date. Wit Studio and Bones (studio), Bones each received six and five nominations for the award respectively. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
''Jujutsu Kaisen (TV series), Jujutsu Kaisen'' is an anime television series based on Gege Akutami's manga Jujutsu Kaisen, series of the same name. The anime series was announced in the 52nd issue of ''Weekly Shōnen Jump'' published in November 2019. In February 2022, a second season was announced. Shōta Goshozono replaced Sunghoo Park as series director, with Sayaka Koiso and Tadashi Hiramatsu designing the characters and Yoshimasa Terui returning as the sole composer. The season aired from July 6 to December 28, 2023. It ran for two continuous cours (TV production), cours and adapted the manga's "Hidden Inventory / Premature Death" and "Shibuya Incident" story arcs. "Hidden Inventory / Premature Death" acts as a prequel to ''Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (film), Jujutsu Kaisen 0'' and the Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, first season, as it focuses on a teenage Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto during their time as students at Jujutsu High in 2006 and how the two went from friends to enemies.
