Crown Legacy FC
Crown Legacy FC is an American soccer team that is located in Matthews, North Carolina. It is the reserve team of Charlotte FC and participates in MLS Next Pro. History On March 31, 2022, Charlotte FC announced it would field an MLS Next Pro team under the leadership of president Darrius Barnes. The club had previously affiliated with the Charlotte Independence of USL League One for the 2022 season. The team was one of seven MLS-affiliated clubs that would join MLS Next Pro in 2023. The club's name, Crown Legacy FC, and circular logo were announced in January 2023 following a delay due to the death of Charlotte FC defender Anton Walkes. The inaugural season is scheduled to begin on March 26. Mecklenburg County Sportsplex
The Sportsplex at Matthews is a large sports complex and park in Matthews, North Carolina, southeast of Charlotte, featuring 12 full-sized soccer fields anchored by a 2,300-seat stadium. The stadium currently seats 5,000 as it has been expanded using modular seating. In 2018 bleacher seating was placed around Field 10 creating a smaller auxiliary stadium used by the Charlotte Independence as a training field and occasionally by the Charlotte Eagles and Lady Eagles for matches. Brian Edwards (soccer)
Brian Edwards (born October 6, 1984) is an American former soccer player who last played as a goalkeeper for Degerfors IF. Career Youth and College Edwards attended Providence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, played club soccer for the Charlotte Soccer Club, and played college soccer at Wake Forest University. In his four-year playing career at Wake Forest, Edwards put up a career 0.78 GA average, 44 career shutouts, and led the Demon Deacons to victory in the 2007 Division I Men's College Cup, defeating Ohio State University in the final. Edwards was named the Final Four's defensive MVP. During his college years he also played with Carolina Dynamo of the USL Premier Development League. Anton Walkes
Anton Charles Walkes (8 February 1997 – 19 January 2023) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender or midfielder. Walkes began his club career with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, making one appearance for the club in the League Cup. In 2017, he was loaned to Atlanta United until the end of the 2017 season. Walkes was then loaned out to League One club Portsmouth, playing the remainder of the 2017–18 season before being signed by Portsmouth permanently in July 2018. He spent two further seasons with Portsmouth, winning the EFL Trophy in 2019, before returning to Atlanta United in January 2020. He was signed by Charlotte FC in 2022, where he remained until his death a year later due to a boat crash in Miami, Florida. Matthews, North Carolina
Matthews is a town in southeastern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. It is a suburb of Charlotte. The population was 27,198 according to the 2010 Census. History In the early 19th century, the new settlement that would become Matthews was unofficially named Stumptown for the copious amount of tree stumps left from making way for cotton farms. The community's name later changed to Fullwood, named after appointed area postmaster John Miles Fullwood. The establishment of a sawmill and the cotton and timber industry helped Fullwood change into a town. Prior to the first train arriving on December 15, 1874, Fullwood acted as a stagecoach stop between Charlotte and Monroe. Charlotte Independence is an American soccer team based in Charlotte, North Carolina that plays in the USL League One, the third tier of the American soccer pyramid. The Independence currently play their home games at American Legion Memorial Stadium in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina.
