Crowley (surname)
Crowley is a surname, which was traditionally pronounced in English but is now often pronounced . In Ireland, the name was first found in Moylurg, in County Roscommon, where it started as a branch of the MacDermots. It is from Teige, a Prince of Moylurg, down to Cruadhlaoch that the line of descent for the Crowleys begins. A junior branch of the Crowley family also emerged and moved to the area of Dunmanway, in the west of County Cork. They eventually became a distinct sept with their chief at Kilshallow, thriving while their family of origin gradually decreased in number. The majority of the Crowley family came from the county of Cork, with three-quarters of the family originating from there. Clive Crowley
Clive Stanley Crowley DCM (2 August 1890 – 25 June 1918) was an Australian grazier and soldier who was killed during the First World War. Letters between Crowley and his mother were part of the historical material that inspired the libretto of ''An Australian War Requiem''. Family Crowley was one of eight children born to Alice (née Bridger 1859–1949) and John Crowley (1847–1925) of Cobbadah station near Barraba, New South Wales. His siblings were: Mabel (1880–1946); Arley (1882–1959); Royce (1884–1963); Audrey (1886–1943); Mildred (1888–1964); Frank (1892–1937); and Keith (1902–1974). The Crowley family were wealthy Methodist graziers who had pioneered European settlement in north-western New South Wales. Frank Crowley (politician)
Frank Crowley (29 May 1939 – 16 August 2022) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 1981 to 1997. Crowley first stood for election in the Cork Mid constituency at the 1977 general election. However, in the landslide victory for Fianna Fáil which saw Jack Lynch returned as Taoiseach with a 20-seat majority, Fianna Fáil took three of the five seats in Cork Mid, and Crowley was unsuccessful. He stood again at the 1981 general election and was elected to the 22nd Dáil for the new constituency of Cork North-West. He was re-elected at five further general elections until he lost his seat at the 1997 general election. Frank Crowley (athlete)
Arthur Francis Crowley (May 21, 1909 – April 13, 1980) was an American middle-distance and long-distance runner. He finished 8th in the 1500 meters at the 1932 Summer Olympics. Career Crowley was Manhattan College's first Olympian and NCAA champion graduating in 1934. Won NCAA two-mile championship in 1934. And, selected for the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980. Crowley placed third in the 1500 meters at the 1931 national championships. The following year the national championships doubled as the Olympic Trials and this time Crowley was second, behind Norwood Hallowell but ahead of NCAA champion Glenn Cunningham and American record holder Gene Venzke. He thus qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles, where he placed 8th. Francis Crowley
Francis Crowley (October 31, 1912 – January 21, 1932) was an American murderer. His crime spree lasted nearly three months, ending in a two-hour shootout with the New York City Police Department on May 7, 1931, that was witnessed by 15,000 bystanders and received national attention.
