Crowan, Sithney And Wendron (electoral Division)
Crowan, Sithney and Wendron is an electoral division of Cornwall in the United Kingdom which returns one member to sit on Cornwall Council. It was created at the 2021 local elections, being formed from the former divisions of Crowan and Wendron and Breage, Germoe and Sithney. The current councillor is Loveday Jenkin, a Mebyon Kernow member. Extent Crowan, Sithney and Wendron represents the villages of Praze-an-Beeble, Crowan, Burras, Carnkie, Rame, Porkellis, Wendron, Trewennack, Sithney, Nancegollan and Townshend, and the hamlets of Polmarth, Penmarth, Halwin, Trenear, Trevenen Bal, Lowertown-by-Helston, Coverack Bridges, Sithney Green and Crowntown, as well as most of the village of Leedstown (some of the northern outskirts of which are covered by the Gwinear-Gwithian and Hayle East division). Cornwall Council
Cornwall Council ( kw, Konsel Kernow) is the unitary authority for Cornwall in the United Kingdom, not including the Isles of Scilly, which has its own unitary council. The council, and its predecessor Cornwall County Council, has a tradition of large groups of independent councillors, having been controlled by independents in the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 2021 elections, it has been under the control of the Conservative Party. Cornwall Council provides a wide range of services to the approximately half a million people who live in Cornwall. Sithney
Sithney ( kw, Merthersydhni) is a village and civil parish in West Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Sithney is north of Porthleven. The population including Boscadjack and Crowntown at the 2011 census was 841. It is named after Saint Sithney, the patron saint of the parish church. Saint Sithney was one of the band of Irish missionaries who came to west Cornwall. William Worcester recorded in 1478 that the body of the saint lay within the church. History Church In 1230 the church belonged to the Antrenon family who attached to it a charge of 4 shillings yearly to the priory of St Germans. In 1267 it was appropriated to Glasney College; the last rector ceded his benefice to the college in 1270. The parish church is of Norman foundation but the present structure is more or less of the 15th century. Leedstown
Leedstown is a village on the B3280 road between Helston and Hayle in the civil parish of Crowan (where the 2011 census population is included.), Cornwall, England. It lies north-west of Helston and south-east of Hayle at above sea level. It is located halfway between the north and south coasts. Leedstown got its name from the Duke of Leeds, who married the daughter of the St Aubyn family. The village has a primary school,a pub and a garage. The first school, described as ″a large boys school″ was funded by John St Aubyn in, or around 1813 and a girls school was built in the 1840s. A board school was opened June 1879. Designed by Mr W Carah of Crowan the school had two large classrooms. Today, the school is now known as Leedstown Community Primary School and is part of Kernow Learning Multi Academy Trust. Lowertown-by-Helston
Lowertown-by-Helston is a large hamlet in Sithney civil parish, bordering Wendron parish, in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The hamlet is one mile north of the centre of the town of Helston, and is built around the River Cober. The hamlet used to be an industrial village, with mills, mines, railway stations, shops and churches; all of which have been closed down. The settlement is named Lowertown on Ordnance Survey maps. The longer name is used when necessary to distinguish it from the Lowertown in Luxulyan parish. Because Lowertown is built on the banks of the River Cober it is vulnerable to flooding. The hamlet is not known to have destructive floods but the river can overflow onto the road and path along it. The hill going down into Lowertown can also flood, but has never had a dramatic flood. Penmarth
Penmarth ( kw, Pollmargh) is a hamlet in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, about west of Penryn and about south of Redruth. The hamlet is often referred to as Carnmenellis, which it was signposted as in the 1970s, and for centuries before the hamlet was known as Polmarth after the surrounding estate, from the Cornish language words ''poll'', meaning 'pool', and ''margh'', meaning 'horse'. The name Penmarth wasn't used until the Chapel was built. There is a picturesque caravan club site on the outskirts of the village called Penmarth caravans, complete with fresh water supplies and electrical hook ups. Chapel Penmarth has a Methodist chapel which was built in 1825. There is also a memorial located next to the chapel, which honours the names of eleven men from the area who died in both World Wars.
