Cross Lake Islanders
The Cross Lake Islanders are a junior "B" ice hockey team based in Cross Lake, Manitoba. They are members of the Keystone Junior Hockey League (KJHL). The Islanders compete out of the Cross Lake Sports Arena, a 1,200-seat facility. History Originally formed in 2006, the Islanders ceased operations after four seasons in the KJHL. The team struggled to be competitive in each of its first four seasons winning just 22 games. After a five-year hiatus, the club returned to the league in 2015. Cross Lake, Manitoba
Cross Lake is the name of two closely related, adjoining but independent communities in the Canadian province of Manitoba. One of the Cross Lakes is the Cross Lake Indian Reserve (Pimicikamak Cree) of the Cross Lake First Nation where the main urban area is called Cross Lake. The other Cross Lake is on nearby provincial Crown land. The communities are located about 520 kilometres by air north of Winnipeg, and 120 kilometres by air south of Thompson. They are situated on the shores of the Nelson River where the river enters Cross Lake. An all-weather road, PR 374, connects the communities to PR 373 via the Kichi Sipi Bridge. In March 2016, Cross Lake appeared in the national news after First Nation officials declared a state of emergency because of an epidemic of suicides. Keystone Junior Hockey League
The Keystone Junior Hockey League (KJHL) is a Junior 'B' ice hockey league in the province of Manitoba, Canada. The league, sanctioned by Hockey Manitoba, was formerly known as the Manitoba Junior 'B' Hockey League. History The KJHL champion used to play the champion of the Northwest Junior Hockey League (NJHL) for the Baldy Northcott Trophy. Since the demise of the NJHL in 2004, the KJHL has been the only Junior 'B' league in the province; thus its champion has been awarded the provincial title. The provincial champion moves on to compete for the Western Canadian Junior 'B' championship, the Keystone Cup. Junior hockey is a level of competitive ice hockey generally for players between 16 and 21 years of age. Junior hockey leagues in the United States and Canada are considered amateur (with some exceptions) and operate within regions of each country. The OCN Storm (short for Opaskwayak Cree Nation Storm) are a Canadian junior B ice hockey team based in Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba. They are members of the Keystone Junior Hockey League and play out of the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre. History OCN Storm were founded in 2012. They are the second junior hockey franchise to play in OCN, the first being the OCN Blizzard of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. In their opening season, the Storm won just two games out of 36, finishing last in the league standings, thus missing the playoffs. The Selkirk Fishermen are a junior "B" ice hockey team based in Selkirk, Manitoba. They are members of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League (CRJHL). The franchise was founded in 1917. They are the longest running junior hockey team in Canada. The Fishermen won the Abbott Cup in 1920, making them the Junior Champion for Western Canada and earning a playoff against the George Richardson Memorial Trophy winning Eastern Champion for the Memorial Cup. The Norway House North Stars are a junior "B" ice hockey team based in Norway House, Manitoba. They are members of the Keystone Junior Hockey League (KJHL). History The franchise was founded in 1991 and competed in the Northwest Junior Hockey League.
