Cross Keys, South Carolina
Cross Keys is an unincorporated community in Union County, South Carolina. Historically, it was the site of the "large and prosperous" Cross Keys plantation. A post office was established at Cross Keys in 1809 and operated until 1909. The Cross Keys House, a plantation home built in 1812–1814, stood at the intersection of two important early highways (the Old Charleston Road, now known as Old Buncombe Road, and Old Ninety-Six Road, also known as the Old Piedmont Stage Road) and was a stop for early travelers in the area. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also listed is Padgett's Creek Baptist Church. Cross Keys House
Cross Keys House is a historic Plantation house in the Southern United States, plantation house located at Cross Keys, South Carolina, Cross Keys, Union County, South Carolina. It was built about 1812–1814, and is a two-story, five-bay, brick Georgian architecture, Georgian Colonial style dwelling. It features a gabled roof with identical pairs of end chimneys, a massive raised first-story portico, and date stones carved with the date of the house's completion (1814), original owner's initials (B.B.), and crossed keys thought to be the insignia of the builder. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Padgett's Creek Baptist Church is a historic Southern Baptist Church (building), church located at 843 Old Buncombe Rd, Union, South Carolina near Cross Keys, South Carolina, Cross Keys, Union County, South Carolina. Cross Anchor, South Carolina
Cross Anchor is a Census-designated place in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population in the 2010 United States Census was 126. History A community post office called Cross Anchor has been in operation since 1809. Cross Anchor may have been named for an old tavern sign depicting two anchors crossed. Alternatively, one Union County historian has stated the name originates from two British brothers who sailed to South Carolina before moving inland. Upon arriving in the Upstate region of the state, the brother who piloted the ship decided to settle in Cross Anchor, naming the community in honor of his role in the brothers' journey.
