Cross Estate Gardens
Cross Estate Gardens, containing both formal and native plant gardens, is located at 61 Jockey Hollow Road in the borough of Bernardsville in Somerset County, New Jersey. It is part of the New Jersey Brigade Encampment Site of the Morristown National Historical Park. The property was acquired in 1975 by the National Park Service. History The property was originally called "Queen Anne Farm" by the owners Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson Bensel between 1903 and 1906. It included a 23-room stone house and stone water tower. The next owners, W. Redmond and Julia Appleton Newbold Cross, called it "Hardscabble House" in 1929. The property was later acquired by the National Park Service in 1975 from their children. New Jersey Brigade Encampment Site
The New Jersey Brigade Encampment Site, also called the New Jersey Brigade Area, was used by the Continental Army in the winter of 1779–80, during the American Revolutionary War. The site is located in Bernardsville, Somerset County, New Jersey and extends into Harding Township, Morris County. About 1,300 men of the New Jersey Brigade were encamped here. It is one of four contributing sites of the Morristown National Historical Park. The Cross Estate Gardens property was added in 1975. The Patriots' Path, also known as the New Jersey Brigade Trail here, is needed to access the marked historical sites. One trailhead is on Hardscrabble Road, another on Jockey Hollow Road. Morristown National Historical Park
Morristown National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park, headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey, consisting of four sites important during the American Revolutionary War: Jockey Hollow, the Ford Mansion, Fort Nonsense and the New Jersey Brigade Encampment site. The sites are located in Morristown and Harding Township, both in Morris County, and in Bernardsville in Somerset County. With its establishment in March 1933, Morristown became the country's first National Historical Park. Sites Jockey Hollow, a few miles south of Morristown along Route 202 in Harding Twp., was the site of a Continental Army encampment. It was from here that the entire Pennsylvania contingent mutinied and later, 200 New Jersey soldiers attempted to emulate them. Fort Nonsense occupied a high hilltop overlooking Morristown, and is believed to have been the site of a signal fire, along with earthworks.
