Cross-country Skiing At The 2022 Winter Olympics – Men's 15 Kilometre Classical
The men's 15 kilometre classical competition in cross-country skiing at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 11 February, at the Kuyangshu Nordic Center and Biathlon Center in Zhangjiakou. The event was won by Iivo Niskanen of Finland. Alexander Bolshunov, representing the Russian Olympic Committee, won silver, and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo of Norway became the bronze medalist. Summary The 15 km distance event alternates between the Olympics, and in 2018 it was the freestyle event. The defending champion was Dario Cologna, who won this distance three times in a row (in 2010, 2014, and 2018), as well as 30k skiathlon in 2014. He finished in the 44th position. The silver medalist Simen Hegstad Krüger qualified for the Olympics but tested positive for COVID just before the games and was not able to start. Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Perttu Hyvärinen (born 5 June 1991) is a Finnish cross-country skier. Born and raised in Kuopio, he has represented Finland in four World Championships and twice in the Olympic Games. He is a silver medalist from the 4 × 10 kilometre relay at the 2023 World Championships. Among Hyvärinen's career-best individual performances are a 6th place in the 15 kilometre classical and a 7th place in the 30 km skiathlon at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. His best individual result in the World Cup is a win at the 10 km Individual start in Toblach during the 2023-24 season. He has two team podium placements, both from relays. Erik Valnes (born 19 April 1996) is a Norwegian cross-country skier. At the 2018 Junior World Championships (U23) he won the gold medal in the sprint, and also competed in the 15 km event. Thomas Maloney Westgård
Thomas Hjalmar Maloney Westgård (born 10 October 1995) is a Norwegian-Irish cross-country skier who competes for Ireland internationally. Westgård was born and grew up in Leka, Norway. His father is Norwegian, and his mother is Irish, and he is a dual citizen of Ireland and Norway. He began skiing competitively in Norway at age 16 or 17. In the summer of 2016, he began representing Ireland in the World Cup. Westgård had begun his nationality transfer process in 2014, and was assisted in the process by Rory Morrish, the head of the Irish Skiing Federation. In local competitions in Norway, he represents the ski club Steinkjer SK in Steinkjer, Norway. Westgård's mother's family name is Maloney, and the Snowsports Association of Ireland refer to him as Thomas Maloney Westgaard. Ivan Andreyevich Yakimushkin (russian: Иван Андреевич Якимушкин; born 17 June 1996) is a Russian cross-country skier. Career Ivan Yakimushkin was born 17 June 1996 to a sportive family. He started cross-country skiing from the age of eight, his first coach was Galina Kabanova. His father Andrey Vladimirovich replaced her when Ivan was 12. Yakimushkin first trained in Murom, then in Tyumen. At the 2015 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Almaty, Yakimushkin won silver in 10 km classical/freestyle skiathlon and gold as part of the relay team. Maurice Manificat (born 4 April 1986) is a French cross-country skier who has competed since 2004. Career He has achieved three World Cup victories, in Lahti (March 2010), in Canmore (December 2012), both in the 15 km + 15 km double pursuit event, and in Davos (December 2017), in 15 km freestyle. Manificat also finished 47th in the 15 km + 15 km double pursuit event at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec.
