Crosby, Merseyside
Crosby is a coastal town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England. Historically in Lancashire, it is north of Bootle, south of Southport and Formby, and west of Netherton. It abuts the areas of Blundellsands to the north and Waterloo to the south. It is approximately 7.2 miles (9.6 km) north of Liverpool City Centre. History The town has Viking roots in common with the other ''-by'' suffixed settlements of Formby to the north and Kirkby to the east. Crosby was known as ''Krossabyr'' in Old Norse, meaning "village with the cross". The settlement was recorded in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086 as ''Crosebi'', and by the year 1212 had become ''Crosseby''. Local people are known as Crosbeians and were referred to as such in the local press but the term is little used today. Crosby is a census-designated place in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,417 at the 2020 census. History The site north of U.S. Route 90 (according to some) was an encampment nicknamed Lick Skillet in 1823 by Humphrey Jackson, one of the 300 original colonists to settle Texas. The name "Lick Skillet" came from the phrase, "The East Texas oxen team drivers sipped the spring sweet water and licked their skillets clean." Humphrey Jackson (1784–1833) moved to Texas from Louisiana in September 1823 and built a log cabin outside Austin's colony on the San Jacinto River, west of the site of present-day Crosby. On August 16, 1824, the Baron de Bastrop granted him title to a league and a labor of land, including the place where he had settled, in what is now Harris County. Crosby County, Texas
Crosby County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 5,133. The county seat is Crosbyton. The county was founded in 1876 and later organized in 1886. Both the county and its seat are named for Stephen Crosby, a land commissioner in Texas. Crosby County, along with Lubbock and Lynn Counties, is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The Lubbock MSA and Levelland Micropolitan Statistical Area (µSA), encompassing only Hockley County, form the larger Lubbock–Levelland Combined Statistical Area. Until the passage of a referendum to permit liquor sales, held on May 11, 2013, Crosby County had been one of 19 remaining prohibition or entirely dry counties within Texas. Crosby Beach
Crosby Beach is part of the Merseyside coastline north of Liverpool in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, England, stretching about North-West from the Seaforth Dock in the Port of Liverpool, through Waterloo, Merseyside, Waterloo, where it separates the sea from the Marina. The beach was awarded Keep Britain Tidy's Quality Coast Award in 2011. Since 2007, the beach has been the permanent home of the Another Place (sculpture), Another Place sculptures by Antony Gormley. History The beach was stabilised from the mid 19th century, as prior to this, high sea tides could come in as far as the first row of houses. In the older dunes north of the coastguard station, between the sea and the West Lancashire Golf Club, there are still some remains of the old wartime defenses. Little Crosby
Little Crosby is a small village in Merseyside, North West England. Despite being a suburb within 8 miles of Liverpool it has retained its rural character by, for example, opting not to have street lights. As part of Lancashire the village was an Urban district (Great Britain and Ireland), urban district in its own right until annexed to the Great Crosby urban district in 1932. This urban district was combined with other districts to form the municipal borough of Crosby, Merseyside, Crosby in 1937. This in turn was absorbed into the new Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in 1974. The village is perhaps the oldest extant Roman Catholic village in England, the squires being the notable recusant Blundell family. USS ''Crosby'' (DD–164) was a in the United States Navy during World War II, later reclassified as APD-17. She was named for Admiral Peirce Crosby. Construction and commissioning ''Crosby'' was launched on 28 September 1918 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation's Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, sponsored by Mrs. C. Tittman. The ship was commissioned on 24 January 1919. Service history After commissioning, ''Crosby'' reported to the Atlantic Fleet. She joined in exercises in Guantanamo Bay until sailing for Trepassey Bay, Newfoundland in May 1919, to serve as plane guard during the historic flight of Navy seaplanes, the first aerial crossing of the Atlantic. On 1 July 1919, ''Crosby'' was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, and a week later she sailed from New York for San Diego, arriving on 7 August. Crosby-on-Eden
Crosby-on-Eden is the combined name for two small villages, High Crosby and Low Crosby, within the civil parish of Stanwix Rural near Carlisle, Cumbria, England. It was formerly a parish in its own right under the name Crosby upon Eden. In 1931 the parish had a population of 238. On 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished and merged with Stanwix Rural, part also went to Wetheral. The villages are by the River Eden north-east of Carlisle, joined by a road that used to be the line of the Stanegate Roman road. It has been thought on spacing grounds that there might have been a small Roman fort in Crosby-on-Eden, as part of the so-called Stanegate frontier which preceded Hadrian's Wall, but if such a fort exists it has not yet been found. The Stanegate ran in a deep cutting still visible next to the road running west from High Crosby, and it has been suggested that part of the reason for the cutting was to produce stone for building work. Crosby ( on, Kross-bør – Cross farm or cross roads, market place) () is a small village located west of Douglas in the parish of Marown in the Isle of Man. Description The village of Crosby is situated in the center of the parish of Marown on the primary A1 Douglas to Peel at the cross-road junction with the A23 Mount Rule Road and the B35 Garth Road. It has a population of about 900. The River Dhoo flows to the south of Crosby village through the main Douglas to Peel Central valley. Village The old St Runius church, which was the original Marown parish church until the new church was built in 1859, is located in Crosby. Part of the old church dates back to the 12th century. It was expanded in 1754. When the new church was built, the original church was used as a mortuary chapel and part of the east side was demolished. Crosby is a city in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,386 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. Crosby is adjacent to its twin city of Ironton, in the Cuyuna iron range. History Crosby was built for the sole purpose of mining. It was named for George H. Crosby, a businessman in the mining industry. Crosby was the location of Minnesota's worst mining disaster, the Milford Mine disaster. On February 5, 1924, a new tunnel was blasted too close to nearby Foley Lake, and water rushed in, killing 41 miners. In the 1932 local elections, Karl Emil Nygard was elected president of Crosby's Village Council, making it the first city in the United States to have a Communist mayor. In August 1957, David G.
