Cronk Ny Arrey Laa
Cronk ny Arrey Laa is a hill in the south west of the Isle of Man. It may be confused with a hill of a similar name in the parish of Jurby, further north along the west coast of the island. At it is the second highest hill in this part of the island, after the South Barrule, 2 miles (3 km) to the east. It is in the parish of Rushen, although the boundary with the parish of Patrick is only about 200 metres to the north of its summit. Name Its name means ''Hill of the Day Watch'' due to it having been used as a look out post for invaders during the time of the Viking invasions. The hill is also known locally as Cronk ny Irree-Laa, meaning ''hill of the rising day'' or ''dawn''. Cronk Ny Merriu
''Cronk ny Merriu'' ( en, Hill of the Dead) is one of the remains of promontory forts in the Isle of Man. Close to Port Grenaugh, this site dates back almost 2,000 years. The bank and ditch of Iron Age date created a defensive promontory fort at ''Cronk ny Merriu''. Later, a rectangular building of Norse style and layout stood here, part of a system of coastal lookout posts. Several of the lookout posts, especially in Santon, where ''Cronk ny Merriu'' is situated, can be visited using the coastal footpath. All of the posts have a rampart on their vulnerable landward side, and excavations have shown that access to the fort was via a strongly built gate. The Scandinavians who arrived in Mann in the eighth and ninth centuries sometimes re-used these Iron Age promontory forts, often obliterating the old domestic quarters with their characteristic rectangular houses; the fine example at ''Cronk ny Merriu'' has been used as the basis of the reconstruction in the House of Manannan. __NOTOC__ Cronk Urleigh (; "hill of the forecourt"; archaic ''Reneurling'') is a stretch of road situated at the 15th Milestone on the primary A3 Castletown to Ramsey in the parish of Kirk Michael in the Isle of Man. Description The nearby small hillock of Cronk Urleigh (Reneurling) adjacent to the main A3 Road is traditionally thought to be the site of the original Tynwald courts until 1422, although the site may have been situated at nearby Rhencullen in Kirk Michael. Origin of name The name Reneurling ( gv, ’division, point of the forecourt’) is linked with the Tynwald court of 1422. The modern name of Cronk Urleigh may be incorrectly associated with the incorrect translation of ‘eagle hill.’ The Rev John Crellin of Kirk Michael writing in 1774 speculated that the name Cronk Urleigh / Reneurling may have been connected with the name for a Roman Standard used by ancient Roman Armies. Cronk-ny-Mona () is situated between the 36 and 37 mile markers used for the Snaefell Mountain Course, being on the primary A18 Mountain Road at the road junction with the A21 ''Johnny Watterson('s) Lane'' and the tertiary C10 Scholag Road in the Isle of Man parish of Onchan. Cronk-ny-Mona, a steep hill topping-out to a sweeping left hand bend located after Hillberry corner on the TT course, leads from agricultural farmland and passes through sympathetically-landscaped modern residential developments on either side, continuing the traditional rural theme and demarking the outer-margins of Douglas town. The hill interrupts the descent from Snaefell Mountain, which resumes at the next TT vantage point, the right turn at Signpost Corner, starting the run down through the outskirts of Douglas to the finish line at TT Grandstand. ''The Railway Series'' is a series of British books about a railway known as the North Western Railway, located on the fictional Island of Sodor. There are 42 books in the series, the first published in May 1945 by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry. Twenty-five more books were written by Awdry, the final one being written in October 1972. Sixteen more were written by his son, Christopher Awdry, between September 1983 and July 2011. The series features many anthropomorphic vehicles, including Thomas the Tank Engine.
