Cristobal's Gold
''Cristobal's Gold'' (French: ''L'or du Cristobal'') is a 1940 French drama film directed by Jean Stelli and Jacques Becker and starring Charles Vanel, Conchita Montenegro and Albert Préjean. Jean Renoir helped the original director, Jacques Becker, prepare the film and worked on the script, before Becker quit after three weeks and was replaced by Jean Stelli.Durgnat p.213 The film is based on a novel by Albert t'Serstevens. It was shot at the Boulogne Studios in Paris and the Victorine Studios in Nice with location shooting taking place around Villefranche-sur-Mer. The film's sets were designed by the art director Eugène Lourié. Frédéric Mariotti (1 April 1883 – 22 February 1971) was a French stage and film actor whose career spanned more than four decades through the early silent film era into the early 1950s. Biography Frédéric Mariotti was born in Marseille and began his film career in the 1917 Georges Monca-directed ''La bonne hôtesse'', starring Roger Vincent and Gabrielle Robinne, for Pathé Frères. Prosper Désiré "Georges" Péclet (27 July 1897 – 11 January 1974) was a French actor, director, and screenwriter. Career Between 1919 and 1957, Péclet played in ninety-five films (including several short films). He was an assistant director in 1927 and then eventually began directing in 1928. Eugène Lourié (russian: Евгений Лурье; 8 April 1903 – 26 May 1991) was a French film director, art director, production designer, set designer and screenwriter who was known for his collaborations with Jean Renoir and for his 1950s science fiction movies. Allmovie contributor Sandra Brennan has written that he was "among the best art directors in French cinema." He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1969 for Best Visual Effects on the film ''Krakatoa, East of Java''. Early life Lourié was born in Kharkov, Russian Empire in 1903. His first experience with cinema was in 1911 when a movie theater opened in Kharkov. In 1919, he worked on an anti-communist film titled ''Black Crowes''.
