Creosote, Bainbridge Island, Washington
Creosote was a community of Bainbridge Island, Washington, along Eagle Harbor. The area is directly visible from the downtown Bainbridge Island community of Winslow. Originally named Eagle Harbor in 1886, in 1908 the name was changed to Creosote because of the manufacturing and application of creosote at the now-defunct Wyckoff Company plant in the area. The former industrial site is to the north of the community of Bill Point and east of the community of Eagledale at the southern side of the entrance to Eagle Harbor. The site is now the city-owned Pritchard Park and is undergoing Superfund clean-up. Bainbridge Island, Washington
Bainbridge Island is a city and island in Kitsap County, Washington. It is located in Puget Sound. The population was 23,025 at the 2010 census and an estimated 25,298 in 2019, making Bainbridge Island the second largest city in Kitsap County. The island is separated from the Kitsap Peninsula by Port Orchard, with Bremerton lying to the southwest. Bainbridge Island is a suburb of Seattle, connected via the Washington State Ferries system and to Poulsbo and the Suquamish Indian Reservation by State Route 305, which uses the Agate Pass Bridge. Winslow, Washington
Winslow is the name of the downtown area of the city of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and is the original name of the city, named for shipbuilder Winslow Hall. It encompasses the area around the main street, Winslow Way, and is made up of approximately overlooking Eagle Harbor. The city has occupied the entire space of Bainbridge Island since February 28, 1991, when the city of Winslow (incorporated on August 9, 1947), annexed the rest of the island after a narrowly passed November 1990 referendum. It officially remained the city of Winslow for several months, until November 7, 1991, at which time the city of Winslow was renamed the city of Bainbridge Island. Creosote is a category of carbonaceous chemicals formed by the distillation of various tars and pyrolysis of plant-derived material, such as wood or fossil fuel. They are typically used as preservatives or antiseptics. Some creosote types were used historically as a treatment for components of seagoing and outdoor wood structures to prevent rot (e.g., bridgework and railroad ties, see image). Pacific Creosoting Company
Pacific Creosoting Company was a company founded on Bainbridge Island that treated logs with creosote as a preservative. History It began operations as The Perfection Pile Preserving Company in 1904. It moved in 1905 to Eagle Harbor at Winslow in the city of Bainbridge Island. The company was taken over and renamed by Horace Chapin Henry in 1906 around when he introduced the new Bethell Process. The company's Vice President and General Manager was a victim of the 1912 RMS Titanic sinking. After Henry died in 1928, his company and its competitor, J. M. Colman's creosote company (located in West Seattle), were combined in 1930 to form the West Coast Wood Preserving Company. Eagledale Park is a park located in the neighborhood of Eagledale on Bainbridge Island in the state of Washington, U.S.. Like several other parks on Bainbridge Island, Eagledale Park comprises land that was once a military installation. Today the park features tennis courts, an off-leash dog park, a picnic shelter, a children's play area, a sand volleyball court and a pottery studio. Superfund
Superfund is a United States federal environmental remediation program established by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA). The program is administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The program is designed to investigate and clean up sites contaminated with hazardous substances. Sites managed under this program are referred to as "Superfund" sites.
