Crawford, Cape Town
Crawford is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, located to the east of the City Centre (CBD) on the Cape Flats to the south of the N2 highway. The suburb is surrounded by the suburbs of Lansdowne, Rondebosch East, Athlone, Belthorn Estate, Rylands, and Belgravia. The main roads through the area are (north to south) Jan Smuts Drive (M17) and (east to west) Turf Hall Road (M24) linking to the M5. Thornton Road was for many years the main thoroughfare for this suburb and a hotbed for anti-apartheid activity in 1976 and 1985. Thornton Road is the location of the Trojan Horse Memorial in honour of those killed in 1985. Crawford is served by a railway station of the same name on the Cape Flats Line. Cape Flats Line
The Cape Flats Line is a commuter rail line in Cape Town, South Africa, operated by Metrorail Western Cape. It connects central Cape Town with the suburbs of Pinelands, Athlone, Lansdowne, Ottery and Retreat. Route The Cape Flats Line service begins at the central Cape Town railway station, from which it runs east along the Cape Town– Bellville main line as far as Maitland. After Maitland station it branches off to the south, passing along the western edge of Pinelands before crossing under the N2 freeway and over the Black River. Jan Smuts
Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts, (24 May 1870 11 September 1950) was a South African statesman, military leader and philosopher. In addition to holding various military and cabinet posts, he served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 to 1924 and 1939 to 1948. Smuts was born to Afrikaner parents in the British Cape Colony. He was educated at Victoria College, Stellenbosch before reading law at Christ's College, Cambridge on a scholarship. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1894 but returned home the following year. Belthorn Estate
Belthorn is a small moorland village situated to the south-east of Blackburn in Lancashire, England. It is about away from junction 5 of the M65 motorway, which runs from Colne to Preston. Belthorn has a primary school, ''Belthorn Academy'', and a large playing field with a children's recreational area. The village has two pubs: the community-owned, recently reopened ''Dog Inn'' and the ''Pack Horse'' (now named Marco Polo); the ''Pack Horse'' is an Italian restaurant and the ''Dog Inn'' serves pub food.
