Crate Day
Crate Day is an unofficial holiday in New Zealand, held on the first Saturday of December. The day consists of drinking a crate of twelve 745 ml beer bottles from 12pm until 12am the next day. Crate Day was the inspiration for Truly Friday's hit single 'Crate Day'. The unofficial holiday was originally created by The Rock radio station in 2010. There are several “commandments” that The Rock established for the day, such as participants supporting "Thy crate of origin", referring to drinking beer made in an individual's birthplace, and "Thou only beef that should attend National Crate Day is thy beef for thy BBQ". The event has grown in popularity since its creation, leading to a number of arrests and injuries. Many alcohol-related businesses have promotions for the event and numerous local councils enact liquor bans during the weekend. The radio station no longer promotes the event. The Rock is a New Zealand mainstream rock music radio station. The station targets 25–44 with a male skew, but has a significant female fan base. It plays rock music and showcases up-and-coming New Zealand bands. The Rock has unpredictable features and countdowns, most notably The Rock 2000 (formerly The Rock 1500, 1000 & 500), an annual music countdown based entirely on songs voted for by their rock listeners. Ashley River / Rakahuri
The Ashley River (; officially Ashley River / Rakahuri) is in Canterbury region of New Zealand. It flows generally southeastwards for before entering the Pacific Ocean at Waikuku Beach, Pegasus Bay north of Christchurch. The town of Rangiora is close to the south bank of the Ashley River. The river's official name was changed from Ashley River to the dual name Ashley River / Rakahuri by the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998. Though the lower reaches of the river are braided, part of the upper river flows through a canyon known as the Ashley Gorge. The river emanates from mountains in the west Lees Valley adjacent to Island Hills station and exits the hills at a gorge near Oxford township. It has tributaries of Duck Creek in this valley and is an accumulator of watershed between Lees Valley and Oxford township. Double-banded Plover
The double-banded plover (''Charadrius bicinctus''), known as the banded dotterel or pohowera in New Zealand, is a species of bird in the plover family. Two subspecies are recognised: the nominate ''Charadrius bicinctus bicinctus'', which breeds throughout New Zealand, including the Chatham Islands, and ''Charadrius bicinctus exilis'', which breeds in New Zealand's subantarctic Auckland Islands. Black-fronted Tern
The black-fronted tern (''Chlidonias albostriatus''), also known as sea martin, ploughboy, inland tern, riverbed tern or tarapiroe,Rod Morris and Alison Ballance, ''"Rare Wildlife of New Zealand"'', Random House, 2008 is a small tern generally found in or near bodies of fresh water in New Zealand, where it forages for freshwater fish, arthropods and worms. It has a predominantly grey plumage. Restricted to breeding in the eastern regions of the South Island, it is declining and threatened by introduced mammals and birds. It is rated as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s Red List of Threatened Species.
