Crafty (illustrator)
Crafty, real name Victor Eugène Géruzez ( in Paris – in Saint-Martin-de-Nigelles) was a French comic writer and illustrator, specialising in books about horses and hunting on horseback. Biography He was the son of Nicolas Eugène Géruzez and Désirée-Antoinette Sales. He was married on 7 March 1874 in Paris, to Louise Marguerite Gabrielle Vavin, the daughter of Alexis Vavin. They had two children, Claire Hélène and Jean Pierre Eugène. He studied under Charles Gleyre, and exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1877. His drawings were first published in ''Le Centaure'', a review established by Léon Crémière, who also published his first two books, '' Snob à Paris'' and ''Snob à l'exposition'' ("Snob at the Paris Exposition"). Alphonse Daudet
Alphonse Daudet (; 13 May 184016 December 1897) was a French novelist. He was the husband of Julia Daudet and father of Edmée, Léon and Lucien Daudet. Early life Daudet was born in Nîmes, France. His family, on both sides, belonged to the ''bourgeoisie''. His father, Vincent Daudet, was a silk manufacturer — a man dogged through life by misfortune and failure. Alphonse, amid much truancy, had a depressing boyhood. In 1856 he left Lyon, where his schooldays had been mainly spent, and began his career as a schoolteacher at Alès, Gard, in the south of France. The position proved to be intolerable and Daudet said later that for months after leaving Alès he would wake with horror, thinking he was still among his unruly pupils. Antoine Gustave Droz (June 9, 1832October 22, 1895), author, French man of letters and son of the sculptor (1807–1872), was born in Paris. He was educated as an artist, and began to exhibit his work in Paris at the ''Salon'' of 1857. Champfleury
Jules François Felix Fleury-Husson (17 September 1821, in Laon, Aisne – 6 December 1889, in Sèvres), who wrote under the name Champfleury (), was a French art critic and novelist, a prominent supporter of the Realist movement in painting and fiction. In 1843 Fleury-Husson moved to Paris. He met Charles Baudelaire and the next year started writing art criticism under the pen-name "Champfleury" for the journal ''L'Artiste''. He was one of the first to promote the work of Gustave Courbet, in an article appearing in an issue of '' Le Pamphlet'' in 1848. In 1850, during a time when the Spanish school was still largely ignored, he advocated the work of El Greco. He wrote about the Le Nain brothers and Maurice Quentin de La Tour. Nicolas Eugène Géruzez
Nicolas Eugène Géruzez (6 January 1799 – 29 May 1865), was a French critic. He was born at Reims. He was assistant professor at the Sorbonne, and in 1852 he became secretary to the faculty of literature. His works include a ''Histoire de l'éloquence politique et religieuse en France aux XIV', XV' et XVI' siècles'' (1837-1838); an ''Histoire de la littérature française depuis les origines jusqu’a la Revolution'' (1852), which he supplemented in 1859 by a volume bringing down the history to the close of the revolutionary period; and some miscellaneous works. Géruzez died in Paris. A posthumous volume of ''Mélanges et pensées'' appeared in 1877. ''L'Éclipse'' was a French magazine of the nineteenth century, appearing from 1868 to 1876. Edited by Francis Polo, ''L'Éclipse'' was a showcase for the illustrator André Gill, in which he drew caricatures of his illustrious contemporaries. Napoleon III disliked the portrait of him drawn by Gill in '' La Lune''. In December 1867, the journal was censored. "''La Lune'' will have to undergo an eclipse," an authority commented to Editor Francis Polo when the ban was instituted, unwittingly dubbing Polo's subsequent publication: ''L'Eclipse'', which made its first appearance on 9 August 1868.
