''Cracked Nuts'' is a 1941 American comedy film directed by Edward F. Cline and written by Erna Lazarus and Scott Darling. The film stars Stuart Erwin, Una Merkel, Mischa Auer, William Frawley, Shemp Howard and Astrid Allwyn. It was released on August 1, 1941, by Universal Pictures. The film is unrelated Wheeler & Woolsey film of 1931 by the same title, although Cline directed both films. Plot Lawrence Trent is a small-town goofball who wins $5,000 in a radio contest. He plans to use the money to marry his sweetheart, but is instead conned into investing it in a phony robot scheme by Boris Kabikoff, whose prototype is actually his partner in a robot suit. When he discovers that he has been swindled, Lawrence tries to recover his money. ''Cracked Nuts'' is a 1931 American pre-Code comedy film directed by Edward F. Cline, from an original screenplay written by Al Boasberg and Ralph Spence. The film stars the comedy duo Wheeler & Woolsey (Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey) as well as Dorothy Lee. It also features Boris Karloff in a small supporting role. The film was one of RKO's only financial successes of the year, with a profit of just over $150,000. Plot Wendell Graham (Bert Wheeler), while a millionaire through inheritance, is incredibly irresponsible. Pat O'Malley (September 3, 1890 – May 21, 1966) was an American vaudeville and stage performer prior to starting a prolific film career at the age of sixteen. He later had a career in television. Career O'Malley was born as Patrick Henry O'Malley, Jr. in Forest City, Pennsylvania. He had circus experience by the time he discovered an interest in motion pictures. His screen career dates from the days of Kalem and Edison Studios. From 1918 to 1927 he appeared in scores of silent films as both a leading man and a character actor i.e.: ''The Heart of Humanity'', ''My Wild Irish Rose'', '' The Virginian'' and in the adaptation of bestseller '' Brothers Under the Skin''. Charles Emmett Vogan (September 27, 1893 – October 6, 1969) was an American actor with almost 500 film appearances from 1934 to 1954, making him, along with Bess Flowers, one of the most prolific film actors of all time. Francis Pierlot (July 15, 1875 – May 11, 1955) was a stage and film actor with over 90 film credits between 1914 and 1953. The Massachusetts-born actor's first film credit was in 1914, but he did not begin appearing in films full-time until 1940, when he was 63 years old. He specialized in playing grey-haired well dressed characters in small parts including judges, priests and lawyers. One of Pierlot's larger roles was as Jean Simmons' manservant in his final film, the biblical epic ''The Robe'' (1953). He died in Hollywood, California, at age 79.
