Cowra Free Press
The ''Cowra Free Press'' was a semi-weekly English language newspaper published from 1878 to 1937 in Cowra, New South Wales, Australia. History The ''Cowra Free Press'' was established in 1878 by proprietor Joseph Charles Ryall, who remained associated with the paper until he died, aged 91, in 1935. The first issues of the paper were published at the office of ''The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser''. After Ryall's death, the paper was published by family members, with his son, R. J. Ryall as manager and editor. In April 1937 the paper was sold to Earnest Rowland Moulten and Mr R. J. Neve. On 1 June 1937 the paper was renamed the ''Lachlan Leader'' "with which is incorporated the ''Cowra Free Press''". The ''Lachlan Leader'' was absorbed by the ''Cowra Guardian'' in October 1943. Cowra is a small town in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia. It is the largest population centre and the council seat for the Cowra Shire, with a population of 9,863. Cowra is located approximately above sea level, on the banks of the Lachlan River, in the Lachlan Valley. By road it is approximately west of the state capital, Sydney, and north of the nation's capital, Canberra. The town is situated at the intersection of three state highways: the Mid-Western Highway, Olympic Highway, and the Lachlan Valley Way. Cowra is included in the rainfall recorder and weather forecast region for the Central West Slopes and Plains division of the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts. History The first European explorer to the area, George William Evans, entered the Lachlan Valley in 1815. He named the area the Oxley Plains after his superior the surveyor-general, John Oxley. ''The Grenfell Record and Bland Advertiser'' is an English language newspaper published in Grenfell, New South Wales, Australia. The newspaper has run continuously under various titles since June 1867 when it began as ''The Mining Record and Grenfell General Advertiser''. History ''The Mining Record and Grenfell General Advertiser'' was first published on 15 June 1867 by William Barnby Howarth, appearing every Saturday. The newspaper changed its name to ''The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser'' on 27 April 1876. In June 1842 ''The Grenfell Record'' absorbed ''The Grenfell Observer'', formerly ''The Vedette'', and became ''The Grenfell Record and Bland Advertiser''.
