Cowes Sports Football Club is a association football, football club based in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. They play in the . The club is affiliated to the Isle of Wight Football Association, which is a division of the Hampshire Football Association. History Cowes Football Club was formed in 1881 and played in friendlies until 1886, when they entered the Hants and Dorset Junior Cup. In 1896 they became founder members of the Hampshire League becoming its first ever champions and completing the double by winning the Hampshire Senior Cup. The club joined the Southern Football League Division Two (South West Section) in 1898, winning that division at their first attempt. However, they finished as runners-up in the overall Division two play-off to Thames Ironworks F.C., Thames Ironworks. Cowes
Cowes () is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry. As of 2020 it had an estimated population of 14,724. Charles Godfrey Leland's 19th-century verses describe the towns poetically as "The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar/This on the eastern, that the western shore". Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. Ricardo José Dognella Lima de Oliveira (; born 6 May 1980) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Athletic. James Edward Hayter (born 9 April 1979) is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward; he last played for Weymouth FC. He holds the record for the fastest Football League hat-trick ever and has been on the winning side in three Football League play-off finals. David Hamer (footballer)
David Bowen Hamer (1 February 1869 – 17 December 1948) (known as "''Taffy''") was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a full-back for Southampton St. Mary's in the early years of the Southern League. Football career Hamer was born at Rhayader in Radnorshire, mid-Wales and enlisted in the Royal Engineers. Based at Aldershot, he was a member of the Royal Engineers team which won the Hampshire Senior Cup for two successive years in 1889 and 1890, but was on the losing side (against Southampton St. Mary's) in March 1891. In December 1891, he left the Armed Services and shortly afterwards he joined Southampton St. Mary's. He remained at the Antelope Ground until the end of the season, playing in the final of the Hampshire County Cricket Club Charity Cup, when the "Saints" were defeated by Hamer's previous club, the Royal Engineers. John Ernest Flood (21 October 1932 – 13 May 2023) was an English professional footballer who played as a winger. Early life Flood was born in Southampton on 21 October 1932. He was one of eight brothers; his younger brother Raymond was a first-class cricketer. Career Flood was capped as an England schoolboy international. Flood joined Southampton from Pennington St. Marks in 1949 and played in the first team from 1952 to 1958, normally as a winger, making 129 appearances in all competitions and scoring 29 goals. His appearances coincided with Southampton's longest spell in Division 3. He later played 17 games in the Football League for Bournemouth, before joining Headington United, where he made 1 appearance in the Southern Football League in August 1959. Percy Albert Mark Cherrett (12 September 1899 – 1984) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward in the Football League for Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle, Crystal Palace, Bristol City and Bournemouth & Boscombe. Life and career Cherrett was born in Christchurch. A centre forward who could also play as an inside forward, Cherrett turned professional with Portsmouth in 1920, having started his career with Boscombe. He scored 36 goals in 67 league appearances before losing his place in the team after three seasons. He was transferred to Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 1923 and continued to score goals regularly. Lewis Edward Buxton (born 10 December 1983) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. Buxton began his career with Portsmouth where he progressed through the youth ranks at the club. He gained first team experience with loan spells at Exeter City and AFC Bournemouth. George Leonard Butt (20 December 1893 – 3 December 1993) was an English footballer who played as a half-back in the 1920s, spending the majority of his career with Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. Football career Butt was born in Freemantle, Southampton and played his youth football with various local teams. Whilst playing on Southampton Common, he was spotted by a Southampton player, Bert Lee, who invited Butt to The Dell for a trial. Butt signed as a professional in April 1912 and spent the next two years as a reserve team player. On the outbreak of World War I, Butt enlisted in the 5th Hampshire Regiment and spent much of the next four years serving in India, where he played cricket for his regiment. On returning to Southampton at the end of the war, he found employment with the Thornycroft shipbuilding works at Woolston. Arthur Brown (footballer Born 1888)
Arthur Charles Brown (born 1888) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Portsmouth and Southampton in the years prior to World War I. Football career Brown was born in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and was a student at Hartley College, part of the University of Southampton. Whilst at the college, he signed for Southampton of the Southern League as an amateur. After a spell at Cowes, he signed for Portsmouth in April 1907. Brown remained with "Pompey" for three years, where he was the third choice 'keeper behind Tom McDonald and Tom Cope, making only nine Southern League appearances, before a move back up the Solent to re-join Southampton in the summer of 1910. Brown made his first-team debut for the "Saints", replacing Tom Burrows against Brighton & Hove Albion on 24 October 1910. James Arthur Bradford (3 July 1902 – 13 April 1944) was an English footballer who played his entire professional career (from 1922 to 1936) as a half back with Southampton. He was one of the "Saints"' most loyal players ever. Playing career Bradford was born in Walsall and played his youth football with Bloxwich All Saints, before joining the Talbot Stead Tube works team (from which Ted Hough was signed in October 1921) where he was spotted by scouts from Southampton and offered a trial. After a successful trial he signed a professional contract in September 1922 but didn't make his first team debut until 18 April 1924 in a Second Division match at Crystal Palace, replacing Bill Turner at centre half. Lee Michael Bradbury (born 3 July 1975) is an English football manager and former footballer who is currently manager of National League club Eastleigh. As a player, he was a striker who made more than 500 appearances in the Football League with notable spells at Portsmouth, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and AFC Bournemouth. He also had spells with Exeter City, Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham City, Derby County, Walsall, Oxford United and Southend United.
