Cowboy Artists Of America
The Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) is an exclusive organization of artists that was founded in 1965. It was founded in 1965 by four prominent western artists, Joe Beeler, Charlie Dye, John Hampton and George Phippen, who have all since died. Since its inception, the exclusive organization of artists has always been dedicated to portraying the lifestyles of the cowboy and the American West, both as it was and as it endures. The CAA was founded in 1965 in Sedona, Arizona and held its first art show in 1966 at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1973, the annual event moved to the Phoenix Art Museum. In April 2011, the museum announced that it would no longer host the event. In 2015, the CAA's 50th anniversary exhibition was to be held at the Scottsdale Museum of the West in Scottsdale, Arizona. Joe Beeler
Joe Neil Beeler (1931–2006) was an American illustrator, artist and sculptor specializing in the field of Western art. In 1965, he cofounded the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) with Charlie Dye, John Hampton and George Phippen. Personal information Beeler was born part Cherokee on December 25, 1931, in Joplin, Missouri to Jack Beeler and Lean Setser. At an early age, Beeler started drawing and continued throughout college at Kansas State Teachers College and later attended the Art Center of Design in Los Angeles, California. After his time in school, Beeler worked as an illustrator for the University of Oklahoma Press. Beeler's career progressed after his one-man performance at the Gilcrease Museum. In 1962, he and his family moved to Sedona, Arizona, where he died. In 1965, Beeler along with many other cowboy artists started the Cowboy Artists of America. The ''Deseret News'' () is the oldest continuously operating publication in the American west. Its multi-platform products feature journalism and commentary across the fields of politics, culture, family life, faith, sports, and entertainment. The ''Deseret News'' is based in Salt Lake City, Utah and is published by Deseret News Publishing Company, a subsidiary of Deseret Management Corporation, which is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Frank McCarthy (March 30, 1924 – November 17, 2002) was an American artist and realist painter known for advertisements, magazine artwork, paperback covers, film posters, and paintings of the American West. Biography Born in New York City, he studied under George Bridgman and Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League of New York then attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Types of works McCarthy began his art career as a commercial illustrator, opening his own studio in 1948. Phil Epp
Phil Epp, born August 28, 1946, in Henderson, Nebraska, is an American artist known for his paintings, murals, prints and sculpture. Much of his work takes is inspiration from the cloudscapes and landscapes of Kansas and the American Southwest. Low horizons broken by wild horses or agricultural buildings, saturated blue skies, and stylized clouds are typical of Epp's easel paintings, often rendered in acrylic. His prints—lithographs and various kinds of etching—typically feature similar landscape features as his easel paintings. Epp also has received a number of public mural and sculpture commissions. He also produces animal sculptures. He maintains an active studio near Newton, Kansas. Howard Terpning (born November 5, 1927) is an American Painting, painter and illustrator best known for his paintings of Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans. Life and career Terpning was born in Oak Park, Illinois. His mother was an interior decorator, and his father worked for the railroad. George Phippen
George Phippen (July 11, 1915 – April 13, 1966) was an American sculptor and painter from Arizona. He was the co-founder and first president of the Cowboy Artists of America. He is the namesake of the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona. Early life Phippen was born in 1915 in Charles City, Iowa. He grew up as a cowboy in Kansas, and he received no formal art education. When he was serving in World War II, he taught himself to paint. After the war, he briefly worked with artist Henry Balink in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Career Over the course of twenty years, Phippen did approximately 3,000 works in his brief career.
