In the United States, a courthouse facility dog is a professionally trained facility dog that has graduated from an accredited assistance dog organization that is a member of Assistance Dogs International. Such dogs assist crime victims, witnesses and others during the investigation and prosecution of crimes, as well as during other legal proceedings. Courthouse facility dogs also provide assistance to Drug Court and Mental Health Court participants during their recovery from drugs, alcohol, mental illness and posttraumatic stress disorder. In addition to the courthouse, these dogs work in Child Advocacy Centers#Child Advocacy Centers, child advocacy centers, district attorney offices, and law enforcement settings. King County Superior Court
The Superior Court of Washington for King County (more commonly, the King County Superior Court) is the largest trial court in Washington state. It is based at the King County Courthouse, 516 Third Avenue, in downtown Seattle, Washington. It also operates a juvenile facility and a Regional Justice Center in Kent, southeast of Seattle. Support Dogs, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency that provides service dogs to people with physical disabilities, and hearing dogs to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1981 by Sandy Maze, and is now based in St. Louis, Missouri. Service dogs are trained to perform tasks their owners cannot, such as retrieve dropped and distant objects, open doors, pull wheelchairs, and help the client get undressed. In addition, the dogs provide companionship and support. The dogs are trained by volunteers, including highly screened female prisoners in an Illinois maximum security prison. Canine Companions For Independence
Canine Companions for Independence is a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that trains and provides assistance dogs. As of 2018, it has placed over 6,000 assistance dogs with recipients at no charge. Foundations Canine Companions for Independence was founded in Santa Rosa, California, in July 1975 by Bonnie Bergin as the first program of its kind. While teaching in Asia, she had seen burros being used by disabled people and thought that dogs could serve a similar role in the US.
