Courthouses in New South Wales were designed by the Colonial Architect, later known as the Government Architect of New South Wales, Australia. History of New South Wales Local Courts The first New South Welsh Charter of Justice of 2 April 1787 created the power to convene a criminal court. This was the Court of Criminal Jurisdiction. The first Charter of Justice also created a Court of Civil Jurisdiction to hear and determine in a summary way all pleas relating to real and personal property, debts, contracts, grant of probates and to administer intestate estates. Magistrates appointed in the early years of the colony were unpaid honorary appointments. The first paid magistrate was D'Arcy Wentworth appointed in 1810. Since the 1990s, when the consultancy service began operating on commercial principles, the Government Architect has reported separately in a second capacity, as an advisor to the government, and serves on various committees and boards in relation to heritage protection, architecture, and design. Bong Bong
Bong Bong was a small township in Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is also the name for the surrounding parish. It is within the Southern Highlands. The site was chosen by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1820 close to the ford on the Wingecarribee River. In 1821 it was laid out and there is an obelisk on the site stating "Site of Bong Bong Military Station and First Township Reserve on the Southern Highlands - surveyed 1821". A post office was established in 1829 which operated until 1867 when, with the combination of the realignment of the ''Great Southern Road'' (now the Hume Highway) and the railway going to the neighbouring town of Moss Vale, Bong Bong declined. All that remains now is the Church, called Christ Church. In the Christ Church cemetery is buried the Australian explorer Joseph Wild. Walter Liberty Vernon
Colonel Walter Liberty Vernon (11 August 184617 January 1914) was an English architect who migrated to Australia and pursued his career as an architect in Sydney, New South Wales. In his role as the New South Wales Government Architect he is noted for designing multiple government buildings, many of which are extant with listings on national and state heritage registers. Early life Vernon was born 11 August 1846 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, the son of a banker's clerk, Robert Vernon and Margaret Liberty. He was articled in 1862 to a London architect, W. G. Habershon, and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and South Kensington School of Art. After completing his studies, he pursued a practice as an architect in London and married Margaret Anne Jones in 1870 at Newport, Wales. His London practice was successful, but he suffered from bronchial asthma and received medical advice to leave England. He migrated to Australia and arrived in Sydney in November 1883. ... Albury () is a major regional city in New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the Hume Highway and the northern side of the Murray River. James Barnet
James Johnstone Barnet, (1827 in Almericlose, Arbroath, Scotland – 16 December 1904 in Forest Lodge, Sydney, New South Wales) was the Colonial Architect for Colonial New South Wales, serving from 1862 to 1890. Early life Born the son of a builder, Barnet was educated at the local high school. In 1843, at the age of sixteen, Barnet moved to London, where he became a builder's apprentice, studying drawing under William Dyce RA and architecture with CJ Richardson FRIBA. He then became of clerk of works with the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. In 1854 he married and sailed for Sydney, Australia, with his new wife, Rosa. Glebe is an inner-western suburb of Sydney. Glebe is located southwest of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney, in the Inner West region.
