The Bats (New Zealand Band)
The Bats are an influential New Zealand rock band formed in 1982 in Christchurch by Paul Kean (bass), Malcolm Grant (drums), Robert Scott (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards) and Kaye Woodward (lead guitar, vocals). Though primarily a Christchurch band, The Bats have strong links to Dunedin and are usually grouped in with the Dunedin sound musicians that emerged in the early 1980s. The band has retained the same four members from 1982 to the present day. History 1981–1986: origins and early years In the early 1980s, Robert Scott and Kaye Woodward were sharing accommodation together in Christchurch. Scott was already playing bass in The Clean, and had also played with bassist Paul Kean in the short-lived band, Thanks To Llamas. Dunedin Sound
The Dunedin sound was a style of indie pop music created in the southern New Zealand university city of Dunedin in the early 1980s. Characteristics According to Matthew Bannister, Dunedin sound "was typically marked by the use of droning or jangling guitars, indistinct vocals and often copious quantities of reverberation." Many Dunedin sound bands drew inspiration from punk rock, as well as pop, rock, and psychedelic music of the 1960s. Influences The Dunedin sound can be traced back to the emergence of punk rock as a musical influence in New Zealand in the late 1970s. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. ''Silverbeet'' is the fourth album by the New Zealand band the Bats, released in 1993. The album was recorded from 15 November to 2 December 1992, at The Outpost in Stoughton, Massachusetts. "Courage" was released as a CD single that included two additional non-album tracks and a reworked version of "Slow Alight". ''Silverbeet'' peaked at No. 26 on the New Zealand album charts. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' wrote that "the album's melodies overshadow the lyrics, conveying an impression that's blithe and hopeful." ''Spill the Beans'' is an EP released in 1994 by New Zealand band The Bats. The EP was released in two versions - a 3-track 7" and a 5-track CD. The 7" included a live version of "Sir Queen", from their 1987 album, '' Daddy's Highway'', which was recorded live-to-air on WFMU, East Orange, New Jersey in July 1993. Unusually, band members Paul Kean and Kaye Woodward swapped roles for two of the tracks, Kean playing guitar and Woodward bass on "Spill The Beans" and "Give In To The Sands". Paul Kean
Toy Love was a New Zealand new wave and punk rock band that originated in Dunedin and was active from 1978 to 1980. Members included Chris Knox, Alec Bathgate and Paul Kean. History Chris Knox was the band's front man and other members were guitarist Alec Bathgate, bass player Paul Kean, drummer Mike Dooley, and keyboard player Jane Walker. The band developed out of the earlier punk band The Enemy from Dunedin, and are often regarded as the progenitors of the Dunedin sound movement. Toy Love were together for less than two years (1978–80) and spent a large part of that time in Australia. They released just one album, which was self-titled ''Toy Love''. The band members were apparently appalled by the mixing of the tracks, which took the edge off the band's deliberately raw sound. Allmusic gave the album a 3/5 rating. Robert Scott (musician)
Robert Scott is a New Zealand musician. He is a part of indie rock bands The Clean and The Bats, playing bass for The Clean, and guitar/vocals for The Bats, and writing songs for both. Other bands with which he has been involved include The Magick Heads, Electric Blood, Gina Rocco & the Rockettes, and Greg Franco & The Wandering Bear. Scott has also released several solo albums in several genres, including alternative rock, experimental instrumentals, and traditional folk music. Scott has also drawn or painted the cover art for many Flying Nun album sleeves. As of 2014, he had a day job as a teacher aide at Port Chalmers School at Port Chalmers.
