County Route 205 (Wayne County, New York)
County routes in Wayne County, New York, are only posted on street blade signs. Each route number is the product of two different numbering systems, both county-wide in nature. The last two digits of the route number serve as a road's base designation and are assigned sequentially from the Monroe County line in the west to the Cayuga County line in the east and from the Lake Ontario shoreline in the north to the Ontario and Seneca county lines in the south. The first digit of each route's designation indicates where the route is located: routes numbered in the 100s are north of Ridge Road; routes in the 200s are south of Ridge Road and north of New York State Route 31 (NY 31); and routes in the 300s are south of NY 31. If a road crosses either of those highways, the first digit of the route's number changes to reflect the road's location in the latter numbering grid. A county highway (also county road or county route; usually abbreviated CH or CR) is a road in the United States and in the Canadian province of Ontario that is designated and/or maintained by the county highway department. NY 88
New York State Route 88 (NY 88) is a north–south state highway in the Finger Lakes region of New York in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 96 in the Ontario County village of Phelps to a junction with NY 104 in the Wayne County town of Sodus. In between, NY 88 passes through the Village of Newark, where it intersects NY 31 and crosses over the Erie Canal. NY 88 originally extended south to the city of Canandaigua when it was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. It was truncated to its current length in August 1972. According to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the NY 382 designation is reserved for the NY 88 alignment. No timetable exists for the redesignation of NY 88 to NY 382. Ridge Road is a east–west road that traverses four counties in Upstate New York in the United States. The road begins adjacent to the Niagara River at an intersection with Water Street in the village of Lewiston, Niagara County, and passes through several towns, villages, and the city of Rochester before arriving at its eastern terminus at a junction with New York State Route 370 (NY 370) southwest of Red Creek, Wayne County. It is named for the rise atop which the road was built, a mound of sand and gravel that was formed when it was the shoreline of ancient Glacial Lake Iroquois (now Lake Ontario). Wolcott is a town in the north-eastern corner of Wayne County, New York, United States. The population of the town was 4,453 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Governor Oliver Wolcott of Connecticut. The Town of Wolcott is in the northeast corner of the county. There are two villages within the town: Wolcott and Red Creek. The town lies west of Syracuse. History The first white colonist settlement began around 1807. Native Americans settled the land many years before. Sodus Bay is a bay on the south shore of Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes. Sodus Bay is located in Wayne County, New York, USA. Most of the bay is in the Town of Huron, however, the western part is in the Town of Sodus. Wolcott (village), New York
Wolcott is a village in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 1,701 at the 2010 census. The name is from Oliver Wolcott, a former governor of Connecticut. The Village of Wolcott is in the southwest part of the Town of Wolcott and is west of Syracuse, New York. Part of the southward spread of the village is in the Town of Butler. History The land where the village is now located was purchased in 1805 by Jonathan Melvin. The area was settled by people from New England. The village was first incorporated in 1852 and re-incorporated in 1873. In the years 1874, 1876, 1879, and 1884 the village experienced major destructive fires. A statue of "Venus arising from the sea" was purchased for $875 in 1913 to mark a public drinking fountain at a natural spring. Sodus is a village in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. The Village of Sodus is near the center of the Town of Sodus and lies between Rochester and Syracuse. The village contains the government center for the Town of Sodus. History The village area was part of the Iroquois Confederacy's territory. Specifically, this was territory of the Onondaga nation for many years. They camped at lake edge, where they could fish. They hunted in the interior woods. After the American Revolution, in which the Onondagas and most Iroquois tribes had allied with Great Britain, they were forced to cede their lands to New York as part of the peace settlement (Treaty of Fort Stanwix).
