Dixie Highway
Dixie Highway was a United States auto trail first planned in 1914 to connect the Midwest with the South. It was part of a system and was expanded from an earlier Miami to Montreal highway. The final system is better understood as a network of connected paved roads, rather than one single highway. It was constructed and expanded from 1915 to 1929. The Dixie Highway was inspired by the example of the slightly earlier Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States. The prime booster of both projects was promoter and businessman Carl G. Fisher. It was overseen by the Dixie Highway Association and funded by a group of individuals, businesses, local governments, and states. In the early years, the U.S. federal government played little role, but from the early 1920s on it provided increasing funding until 1927. Florida State Road 724
History In the mid-1970s, the Florida Department of Transportation (formerly the State Road Department) started a sequence of events that eventually resulted in the transferral of hundred of miles of roadway from State of Florida maintenance to county control. The first step was the addition of an "S-" or "C-" prefix onto the original FDOT designation ("S" represented "secondary"; "C" represented "county"). In 1977, House Bill 803, Chapter 77-165 in the ''Laws of Florida'', was passed in the Florida Legislature. This transportation policy act eliminated the State Highway Secondary System which consisted of county roads that were maintained by the state. The provisions went into effect on July 1, 1977. State Road signs started disappearing from the "C" roads and were replaced by ''Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices'' (MUTCD) compliant county road signs in the early 1980s; the transition of "S" roads to county control took a bit longer. Okeechobee County Airport
Okeechobee County Airport is a general aviation airport located 3 mi (4.82 km) northwest of Okeechobee, in Okeechobee County, Florida. History The airport was opened in April 1940 as Conners Field. It was leased by the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 as an auxiliary training field, and used by the Hendricks Army Airfield B-17 Flying Fortress training school near Sebring during World War II. The runways and other facilities were improved by the Army, and the airport was used for training touch-and-go landings landings and emergencies. No permanent military units or personnel were assigned. With the end of the war in 1945, the site was returned for civil use. Since then, Okeechobee has been operated as a general aviation airport.
