County Of Frome
The County of Frome is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia in straddling the Mid North and Flinders Ranges regions. It was proclaimed in 1851 by Governor Henry Young and was named for the former Surveyor-General of South Australia, Edward Charles Frome. The iconic Mount Remarkable in the Hundred of Gregory is at the centre of the county. Local government The earliest local government to be formed in the county was the Corporate Town of Port Augusta, established at Port Augusta in 1875. The adjacent Corporate Town of Davenport was established at Davenport in 1887. Mount Remarkable
Mount Remarkable is a mountain in South Australia located in the Flinders Ranges about north of the centre of the capital city of Adelaide and immediately north-west of the town of Melrose, which was once named Mount Remarkable itself, and which is located at its base. The mountain has a height of . It and the adjoining range is described as having “high strike ridges on quartzite” with “lower rounded ridges on shale” and as having a “cover of forest, parkland and some woodland”. Since 1972, it has been located within the boundaries of the protected area known as the Mount Remarkable National Park. Corporate Town Of Davenport
The Corporate Town of Davenport was a local government area in South Australia that existed from 1887 to 1932 on land now located within the suburb of Port Augusta. A proposal to create a new local government area consisting of suburbs "annexed to the existing Corporation of Port Augusta" was discussed by residents interested in "the subject of local self-government" as recently as February 1887. On 1 March 1887, a meeting at the Pastoral Hotel agreed boundaries for a new corporation to be called ''Davenport'' which was to consist of three wards named ''First'', ''Second'' and ''Third'' and signed a petition arguing for the creation of the new corporation. The District Council of Kanyaka-Quorn was a local government area in South Australia that existed from 1969 to 1997. The Council came into existence on 1 April 1969 following the merger of the Corporate Town of Quorn with the surrounding District Council of Kanyaka. Corporate Town Of Quorn
The Corporate Town of Quorn was a local government area in South Australia from 1883 to 1969, centred on the town of Quorn. It was incorporated on 25 October 1883, prior to the 1888 establishment of the rural District Council of Kanyaka, which surrounded the town for most of its history. It consisted of a 171 acre area in Quorn township itself, with parkland surrounding the town subsequently serving as the boundary with the Kanyaka council. It was divided into four wards: North, South, East and West, each represented by two councillors. It gained a small section of the cadastral Hundred of Pichi Richi on 18 April 1888. The District Council of Kanyaka was a local government area in South Australia that existed from 1888 to 1969. History The council was established on 5 January 1888 under the provisions of the ''District Councils Act 1887''. On creation, the council comprised the hundreds of Boolcunda, Cudlamudla, Kanyaka, Moockra and Palmer, and parts of the hundreds of Pichi Richi, Yarrah and Wyacca, east of the Middle Range and Dutchman's Range ridge line, which together make up the eastern two thirds of the County of Newcastle. The council area thus extended north and east from Pichi Richi Pass (about southwest of Quorn) to a point about due south of Hawker. Port Germein is a small sea-side town in the Australian state of South Australia located about north of the state capital of Adelaide city centre, Adelaide and about north of the city of Port Pirie on the eastern side of South Australia's Spencer Gulf overlooking Germein Bay. Port Germein was named after Ben Germein#Family, Samuel Germein, who moved into the territory in 1840, although some credit his brother John to be the first European to traverse the area. Wilmington is a town and locality in the Yorke and Mid North region of South Australia.The town is located in the District Council of Mount Remarkable local government area, north of the state capital, Adelaide. The District Council of Port Germein was a local government area in South Australia, centred on the town of Port Germein. It was gazetted on 5 January 1888 under the provisions of the ''District Councils Act 1887'' and encompassed the hundreds of Baroota, Wongyarra, Booleroo, Telowie, Darling and Appila. It replaced an abortive earlier municipality, the Corporate Town of Port Germein, which had been established on 15 September 1887 when residents, concerned about increased taxation and their interests being lost in a broader shire under the forthcoming reforms, decided to incorporate the town. District Councils Act 1887
The District Councils Act 1887 was an act of the Parliament of South Australia. It received assent on 9 December 1887, and its provisions came into effect when proclaimed by Governor William C. F. Robinson on 5 January 1888. The legislation introduced local government to many areas of South Australia in which it had not previously existed, especially in the north and west of the state, and involved substantial change to many existing municipalities. In total, it involved the creation of 20 new councils, the expansion of 35 existing councils into lands previously without local government, and the amalgamation of 17 pre-existing councils into eight larger councils.
