Countdown (supermarket)
Countdown is an Australian-owned New Zealand full-service supermarket chain and subsidiary of Woolworths New Zealand, itself a subsidiary of Australia's Bella Vista’s Woolworths Group. It is one of two supermarket chains in New Zealand in terms of number of stores, although the rival Foodstuffs chain has a larger number of premises including smaller retail stores in rural areas. There are 184 Countdown stores, with 61 in Auckland. History Discount supermarket chain (1981–2008) In May 1981, the first Countdown market opened at Northlands Shopping Centre in the Christchurch suburb of Papanui by Rattrays Wholesale. Rolleston, New Zealand
Rolleston ( mi, Roretana, Tauwharekākaho) is the seat and largest town in the Selwyn District, in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is located on the Canterbury Plains south-west of Christchurch, and is part of the wider Christchurch metropolitan area. The town has a population of making it New Zealand's 24th-largest urban area and the third-largest in Canterbury (behind Christchurch and Timaru). It was nicknamed the "Town of the Future" in the 1970s by Prime Minister Norman Kirk. The "Town of the Future" signage has since been removed from the entrances to Rolleston. Northlands Shopping Centre, in Christchurch, New Zealand, is the South Island's second-largest mall. Founded in 1967, it is owned by Kiwi Property Group. The Shopping centre is single-level, with over 120 tenants, including shops, bars, cafés and restaurants. It also has a multistorey car park. The main occupants of the shopping centre are Farmers department store, The Warehouse retail store, Hoyts cinema, Pak'nSave supermarket, and Countdown supermarket. Woolworths New Zealand Limited (formerly Progressive Enterprises) is the second largest grocery company in New Zealand (behind Foodstuffs), with revenue of NZ$6.2 billion for the year to June 2018. PAK'nSAVE (stylised PAK'nSAVE, originally PAK 'N SAVE) is a New Zealand discount food warehouse chain owned by the Foodstuffs cooperative. It is one of the three main supermarket chains, alongside Countdown and New World. There are 56 stores across the country, including 17 in Auckland. The stores sell a range of produce, including meat, fish, bread, liquor and other groceries. Stores are large and have a no frills environment, often with unlined interiors and concrete floors. Customers are left to pack their own bags, however (since 2019) plastic bags are no longer sold at checkout. Customers are instead expected to supply their own re-usable bags. Many stores offer boxes set on or under a large desk where customers can pack their groceries for easier convenience. New World is a New Zealand full-service supermarket chain. Each store is independently owned and operated, and is part of one of two Foodstuffs' co-operatives (Foodstuff North Island and Foodstuffs South Island). Other independently owned and operated members of the Foodstuffs co-operatives include Pak'nSave and Four Square stores. History Founded in 1963, New World was the first American-style full-service supermarket brand of Foodstuffs, and the second in New Zealand (after Foodtown). As of December 2021, there are more than 140 New World supermarkets across the North and South Islands. Gull Petroleum is a petroleum distributor in Australia. Founded in Perth, Western Australia in 1976, it was later owned by Puma Energy and now owned by Chevron Corporation ( Caltex). History Gull Petroleum was founded by Keith Mitchell, Mark Quackenbush and Terry Lockwood in 1976. Mitchell and Lockwood first met each other while working at Golden Fleece. While at Golden Fleece Mitchell made a big impression in the Western Australian oil and gas industry rapidly climbing the Golden Fleece corporate ladder. This led to Mitchell being headhunted by Quackenbush's father, the owner of Western Oil. When Mitchell joined Western Oil, Lockwood followed across with him. Price Chopper was part of the Woolworths New Zealand Supermarket Group, alongside Woolworths and Big Fresh. History The Price Chopper format was established in 1987, as a discount supermarket chain with a limited fresh foods. Woolworths rebranded its smaller stores under the new brand, allowing them to remain open and ensure the sites were not taken over by competitors. Price Chopper stores were centrally located in small towns and metro areas with no discount supermarkets, and the stores had the same modern technology of larger supermarket chains. There were 14 Price Chopper stores in 2001. There were 17 Price Chopper stores in 2003. There were no stores in Auckland. Big Fresh
Big Fresh was a New Zealand supermarket chain. The first Big Fresh store opened in 1988 in Mount Wellington, Auckland. In 2003, the Big Fresh brand was shut-down by its owner Progressive Enterprises, with branches converted to Countdown or Woolworths, or shut down altogether. The distinguishing feature of the Big Fresh was its emulation of a farmers market in a supermarket environment, with a focus on an extensive range of fresh foods; this was unique in New Zealand at the time of its opening.
