Count Me Out (1938 Film)
''Count Me Out'' is a 1938 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoon directed by Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton. The short was released on December 17, 1938, and features Egghead. Plot Egghead decides to get rich by boxing, so he takes a boxing course on a phonograph. When he graduates, he takes on dog-like champion Biff Stew, who punches Egghead around until Egghead accidentally knocks him out. We learn this is a dream after Egghead is knocked out by his boxing equipment. Ben Hardaway
Joseph Benson Hardaway (May 21, 1895 – February 5, 1957) was an American storyboard artist, animator, voice actor, gagman, writer and director for several American animation studios during The Golden Age of Hollywood animation. He was sometimes credited as J. B. Hardaway, Ben Hardaway, B. Hardaway and Bugs Hardaway. He fought in World War I in the 129th Field Artillery Regiment, Battery D. Army service Hardaway was enlisted in World War I on June 4, 1917, and was discharged on April 9, 1919, a total of 26 months. He was led in the 129th Field Artillery Regiment by future president Harry S. Truman, in which he attended his reception planned by Forrest Smith at the Shoreham Hotel in 1949 and his inauguration, following him being re-elected. The last 14 months of his service were served in France. Career Hardaway started his career at the Kansas City Post as a cartoonist before eventually going into the animation business, working for the Kansas City Film Ad Service. ... ''A-Lad-In Bagdad'' is a 1938 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' short directed by Cal Howard and Cal Dalton. The short was released on August 27, 1938 and features Egghead. Plot Egghead is a happy looking wanderer who is traveling near an Arabian-like place, where he is lured to a prize machine. He sees a golden lamp but can't get it because another man wants it and is already using the machine. The man however lucks out and gets candy beans. He runs to the back corner in order to weep his sorrow away. Egghead sneaks up and tries his luck at getting the gold-lamp, and succeeds. He says, "Oh boy am I lucky". It is then revealed that the only he reason he got the lamp was because he mistakes it for a sugar bowl. He looks at the back of the lamp and it reads, "Rub Lamp 3 times". Egghead does so and a genie appears, which scares Egghead and he runs off; only for the genie to pull him right back. The genie then explains to him that he isn't, going to hurt him. Cal Howard
Calvin Henry Howard (March 24, 1911 – September 10, 1993) was an American cartoon story artist, animator and director mostly remembered for his work at Walter Lantz Productions and Warner Bros. Cartoons. He was also the voice actor of Gabby Goat in '' Get Rich Quick Porky'' and Meathead Dog in ''Screwball Squirrel''. Career In the late 1920s, Howard became a story man and animator for Walter Lantz Productions, then Walt Disney Animation in 1929. During his career, he worked for several pioneer animators besides Lantz and Disney, including Max Fleischer and Ub Iwerks. From 1930 to 1933, Howard serves as a story man for Iwerks and then Lantz. In 1938, Howard left Warner Bros. Cartoons with his friend Tedd Pierce to work for Fleischer Studios in Miami, and served as the live-action model for Prince David in Fleischer's '' Gulliver's Travels''.
