Cottonwood, Somervell County, Texas
Cottonwood is an unincorporated community in western Somervell County, Texas. It is located off of Farm to Market Road 51 and is about nine miles southwest of Glen Rose. History The community was built around the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Christ, later renamed the Cottonwood Baptist Church. Following an open meeting in August 1874, residents from the area decided to build a log cabin that would serve as a church. The church was organized in 1875 by six settlers from the county- Daniel, Eliza, and Sarah Shipman, Solomon and Sally Sutton, and B.M. McFaddin. In its first year, the church had an attendance of eight, Ten years later, in 1880, that number grew to sixty. A school served the community by the early 1900s and continued through the 1930s. History The original ''Handbook'' was the brainchild of TSHA President Walter Prescott Webb of The University of Texas history department. Glen Rose, Texas
Glen Rose is a city in and the county seat of Somervell County, Texas, United States. As of the 2012 census estimate, the city population was 2,502. History 19th century The area was first settled in 1849 by Charles Barnard, who opened a trading post near Comanche Peak. After the region became a federal Indian reservation in 1855, Barnard moved his business to Fort Belknap (Newcastle, Texas), Fort Belknap. A three-story stone gristmill was constructed along the Paluxy River and the town that grew up around it became known as Barnard's Mill.
