Costin Sports Roadster
The Costin Sports Roadster is a lightweight mid-engined sports car that was intended for initial launch in the mid-1990s. A prototype test bed chassis was finished in 1991 at Costin Ltd in Wales. The original Costin Cars were designed by the aerodynamicist Frank Costin. Costin had previous associations with Vanwall, Lotus, Maserati, and Dealer Team Vauxhall (DTV) for race car chassis designs. A modern design update of the original Costin Sports Roadster, was designed and hand sculpted full size in wood and plastic filler by William P. (Bill) Barranco in 1994 in London UK. In absit 1995, the first two (2) prototypes were built in the mid nineties with revised body styling but was not road registered until recently. In total 6 chassis were constructed and 2 bodies were produced from the FRP molds. The company Costin Ltd went into liquidation following unsuccessful attempts to find funding for the venture. Frank Costin
Francis Albert Costin (8 June 1920 – 5 February 1995) was a British automotive engineer who advanced monocoque chassis design and was instrumental in adapting aircraft aerodynamic knowledge for automobile use. Career Costin was an engineer with the de Havilland Aircraft Company when, in 1954, his brother Mike, a former de Havilland engineer then working for Lotus Engineering Ltd., asked him to design an aerodynamic body for a new racing car. Intrigued by the idea of applying aerodynamics to racing cars, Costin designed the body for the Lotus Mark VIII. Unlike his brother, Costin was never a Lotus employee; his work there was either as a paid consultant or as a volunteer. Vanwall was a motor racing team and racing car constructor that was active in Formula One during the 1950s. Founded by Tony Vandervell, the Vanwall name was derived by combining the name of the team owner with that of his Thinwall bearings produced at the Vandervell Products factory at Acton, London. Dealer Team Vauxhall, usually known as DTV, was a motorsport organisation. in the absence of official sponsorship of motorsport by General Motors and Vauxhall Motors specifically, a group of London-based Vauxhall dealers decided to start an organisation to financially support racing and rallying. The TMC Costin is a Clubman-style sports car built from 1983 to 1987 in Castlebridge, County Wexford, Republic of Ireland. Fewer than forty were produced. History The Thompsons of County Wexford, Ireland were a farming family with six sons. One son, Peter Thompson, embarked on an engineering career, first as a draughtsman at agricultural engineering firm Phillip Pierce and Co. in Wexford and later with the Timoney Research Centre at Navan, where he was in charge of several projects related to the design of armoured personnel carriers.
