Costa Rica At The Paralympics
Costa Rica made its Paralympic Games début at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona, sending just two representatives to compete in men's track and field. Absent in 1996, it returned in 2000, and has participated in every edition of the Summer Paralympics since then. Its delegations have always been small: a single athlete in track and field in 2000; a single swimmer in 2004; two table tennis players in 2008, a single athlete in track and field and a cyclist on 2012. Sherman Guity is the first medalist for Costa Rica at the Paralympics. He won the silver medal in the men's 100 metres T64 event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan. Athletics at the 1992 Summer Paralympics consisted of 239 events, 152 for men and 62 for women. Because of a tie in the first position of the men's 100m in class B1 and another tie also happened in the third place of the high jump event in the b2 class for men. 240 gold medals, 238 silver and 240 bronze were awarded. Swimming, athletics and table tennis used a medical based classification system for the Barcelona Games. The Summer Paralympics also known as the Games of the Paralympiad, are an international multi-sport event where athletes with physical disabilities compete. This includes athletes with mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness, and cerebral palsy. The Paralympic Games are held every four years, organized by the International Paralympic Committee. Sherman Guity (born 3 December 1996) is a Costa Rican Paralympic athlete. He won the silver medal in the men's 100 metres T64 event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan. This was the first medal won by a competitor representing Costa Rica at the Paralympics. He also won the gold medal in the men's 200 metres T64 event. Career He was banned from 23 July 2019 to 22 July 2021 after testing positive for a banned substance. Costa Rica first participated at the Olympic Games in 1936, but then missed the next four Olympiads. The nation returned to the Games in 1964, and has participated in every Summer Olympic Games since then. Costa Rica has also participated in several Winter Olympic Games since 1980. Costa Rican athletes have won a total of four medals, all by Silvia Poll and Claudia Poll in swimming.
