He is known for films with political and social themes, such as the political thriller ''Z (1969 film), Z'' (1969), for which he won an Academy Awards, Academy Award for Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Best Foreign Language Film, and ''Missing (1982 film), Missing'' (1982), for which he won the Palme d'Or and an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. ''The Axe'' (US title: ''The Ax'') (french: Le couperet) is a 2005 black comedy-drama thriller film directed by Costa-Gavras and starring José Garcia, Karin Viard, and Olivier Gourmet. The film is an adaptation of the 1997 novel ''The Ax'' by Donald E. Westlake, and follows the attempts by a laid-off employee to get back on his feet. He eventually becomes so desperate that he is prepared to kill his job competitors. The film is a co-production between France, Belgium and Spain. The film premiered at the 2016 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Plot Fatima is a strong-willed woman who works as a masseuse in a hamam in Algiers.
