Coso (former Settlement), California
Coso (also, Granite Springs) was a settlement in Inyo County, California. It is located in the Coso Range east-southeast of Coso Peak. Today, Coso is located within Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Dr. Darwin French discovered gold at the site in 1860. The place was named Granite Springs in 1860. The name Coso comes from the Coso people, local Native Americans. There are at least three places named Coso in Inyo County. Coso Range
The Coso Range of eastern California is located immediately south of Owens Lake, east of the Sierra Nevada, and west of the Argus Range. The southern part of the range lies in the restricted Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and the northern part of the range is designated as the Coso Range Wilderness. The mountains include Coso Peak, at above sea level, as well as Silver Peak and Silver Mountain, both more than in height. The range is underlain principally by Mesozoic granitic rocks that are partly veneered by upper Cenozoic volcanic rocks of the Coso Volcanic Field. The volcanic units (in apparent decreasing age) include (1) widespread basaltic flows, (2) dacitic flows and tuff, and (3) rhyolitic domes and flows and basaltic cones and flows. Coso Peak
Coso Peak is the highest summit in the Coso Range, a small mountain range east of the Sierra Nevada, in Inyo County in the U.S. state of California. The peak has an elevation of and a topographic prominence of , making it the 88th most prominent mountain in California. While much of the northern part of the Coso Range is within the Coso Range Wilderness protected area, administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Coso Peak itself and much of the southern part of the range is within the boundaries of Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, a U.S. Navy research, testing, and evaluation installation. Darwin is an unincorporated mining community in Inyo County, California, United States. It is located southeast of Keeler, at an elevation of . According to Erwin Gudde, French of Fort Tejon was with a party of prospectors in the area during the fall of 1850. French also led a party into Death Valley in 1860 to search for the mythical Gunsight Lode via the local wash, lending his first name to the wash, canyon and future town. Silver and lead discovery at the place led to the founding of a settlement in 1874. A post office opened in 1875, closed for a time in 1902, and remains open. The town prospered when Eichbaum Toll Road opened in 1926, opening Death Valley from the west.
