The ''Coronation of the Virgin'' is a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin by the Italian early Renaissance painter Fra Angelico, executed around 1432. It is now in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence. The artist executed another ''Coronation of the Virgin (Fra Angelico, Louvre), Coronation of the Virgin'' (c. 1434–1435), now in the Louvre in Paris. History The work is mentioned as by Fra Angelico in a manuscript of the Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze,Cod. Magliabe., XVII, 17 and Giorgio Vasari writes that it was located in the church of Sant'Egidio at Florence. Two panels of the predella which once was part of the work are known; they portray the ''Marriage'' and the ''Funeral of the Virgin'', and are currently exhibited in the museum of San Marco, Florence. Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico (born Guido di Pietro; February 18, 1455) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his '' Lives of the Artists'' as having "a rare and perfect talent".Giorgio Vasari, ''Lives of the Artists''. Penguin Classics, 1965. He earned his reputation primarily for the series of frescoes he made for his own friary, San Marco, in Florence. Gilding is a decorative technique for applying a very thin coating of gold over solid surfaces such as metal (most common), wood, porcelain, or stone. A gilded object is also described as "gilt". ''The Coronation of the Virgin'' is a tempera on panel polyptych by the Italian late Gothic artist Lorenzo Monaco, centred on the subject of the Coronation of the Virgin. Once in the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, it is now housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It is dated February 1413 which, in the Florentine calendar (which began in March), corresponded to 1414. History The painting is mentioned in the early 15th century by Antonio Billi. In the late 16th century, it was replaced in the altar it occupied by a large canvas by Alessandro Allori. The ''Coronation'' was rediscovered in the 19th century, when it was housed in the Camaldolese abbey of San Pietro a Cerreto, in poor condition. In 1872 it was restored to its frame. Lorenzo Monaco
Lorenzo Monaco (1370 – 1425) was an Italian painter of the late Gothic to early Renaissance age. He was born Piero di Giovanni in Siena, Italy. Little is known about his youth, apart from the fact that he was apprenticed in Florence. He was influenced by Giotto and that artist's followers Spinello Aretino and Agnolo Gaddi. Life In 1390, Piero di Giovanni joined the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli. He was thenceforth generally known as ''Lorenzo Monaco'' ('Lawrence the Monk'). Saint Zenobius ( it, San Zanobi, Zenobio) (337–417) is venerated as the first bishop of Florence. His feast day is celebrated on May 25. Life Born of a Florentine noble family, Zenobius was educated by his pagan parents. Antoninus of Florence (1 March 13892 May 1459), was an Italian Dominican friar, who ruled as an archbishop of Florence. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
