Coronation was a provincial electoral district in Alberta mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1913 to 1926 under the First Past the Post voting system and under Single Transferable Vote from 1926 to 1940. Electoral district history The Coronation electoral district was created prior to the 1913 Alberta general election from a portion of the Sedgewick electoral district. The Coronation electoral district was re-distributed prior to the 1940 Alberta general election, the area the district covered was merged with Acadia to form the riding of Acadia-Coronation. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) The first representative for the district, Liberal Frank H. Whiteside was killed in September 1916, no by-election was held to fill the seat. Central Alberta is a region located in the Canadian province of Alberta. Central Alberta is the most densely populated rural area in the province. Agriculture and energy are important to the area's economy. Coronation, Alberta
Coronation is a town in east-central Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by the County of Paintearth No. 18. It is located at the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 872, approximately west of the Saskatchewan border. History Coronation was incorporated as a village on December 16, 1911, the year George V came to the throne hence its chosen name, then was officially declared a town on April 29, 1912. After moving south from the Haneyville, some distance north of its present location to be congruent with rail lines, Coronation was expected to be a hub town. However, larger towns such as Calgary and Red Deer began to evolve into cities and Coronation was forgotten in that regard. Alberta provincial electoral districts are currently single member ridings that each elect one member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. There are 87 districts fixed in law in Alberta. History The original twenty five districts were drawn up by Liberal Member of Parliament Frank Oliver prior to the first general election of 1905. The original boundaries were widely regarded as being gerrymandered to favour the Alberta Liberal Party, although the Liberal Party did receive the majority of votes in the 1905 election and thus rightly formed majority government. Every boundary redistribution since 1905 has been based on the original boundaries, with districts being split or merged. 1940 Alberta General Election
The 1940 Alberta general election was held on March 21, 1940, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Despite its failure to implement its key policy, providing prosperity certificates to all Albertans, the Social Credit Party of Premier William Aberhart won a second term in government. Nevertheless, it lost a considerable number of seats that it had gained in the 1935 landslide. This provincial election, like the previous three, saw district-level proportional representation (Single transferable voting) used to elect the MLAs of Edmonton and Calgary. City-wide districts were used to elect multiple MLAs in the cities. All the other MLAs were elected in single-member districts through Instant-runoff voting. 1913 Alberta General Election
The 1913 Alberta general election was held in March 1913. The writ was dropped on 25 March 1913 and election day was held 17 April 1913 to elect 56 members to the 3rd Alberta Legislature. Elections in two northern districts took place on 30 July 1913 to compensate for the remote location of the riding. The method to elect members was under the First Past the Post voting system with the exception of the Edmonton district which returned two members under a plurality block vote. The election was unusual with the writ period for the general election being a very short period of 23 days. Premier Arthur Sifton led the Alberta Liberal Party into his first election as leader, after taking over from Alexander Rutherford. Premier Rutherford had resigned for his government's involvement in the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway Scandal but remained a sitting member.
