Jon Cornish (born November 5, 1984) is a former Canadian football running back who played nine seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was drafted 13th overall in the 2006 CFL Draft after playing college football at the University of Kansas. Cornish was inducted as a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2019. While at Kansas, Cornish set the KU single-season rushing record with 1,457 yards and was selected First Team All-Big XII in his senior year. During his collegiate career, he was also selected Team Offensive MVP in both his junior year and senior year. Sandy Cornish
Sandy Cornish (1793–1869) was an African American farmer, businessperson, and civic leader in Key West, Florida. As a formerly enslaved man who purchased his freedom, he publicly maimed himself to prevent being returned to slavery. Slavery and freedom Cornish was born into slavery in Maryland in 1793. In 1839, his enslaver hired him out to a railroad-building project in Port Leon, Florida. The position allowed Cornish to earn money for himself, and after nine years of work at $600 a year, he was able to purchase his freedom and that of his wife Lillah. However, the papers showing him to be free were destroyed in a fire. Lacking proof of his emancipation, he was seized by slave traders but managed to break free. Samuel Eli Cornish (1795 – 6 November 1858) was an American Presbyterian minister, abolitionist, publisher, and journalist. He was a leader in New York City's small free black community, where he organized the first congregation of black Presbyterians in New York. He is known for being accused of raping an indentured servant, William Couse, and is reported to have been one of the earliest people, if not the first person, to have been hanged for sodomy in what would eventually become the United States.
