Cornelis Easton
Cornelis Easton (10 June 1864 – 3 June 1929) was a Dutch journalist and amateur astronomer who wrote popular material on astronomy and climatology apart from giving lectures. As a journalist he worked with the ''Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant ''NRC'', previously called ''NRC Handelsblad'' (), is a daily morning newspaper published in the Netherlands by NRC Media. It is generally accepted as a newspaper of record in the Netherlands. History ''NRC Handelsblad'' was first published on ...'' (1895–1906), ''Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië, Nieuws van den Dag'' (1906–1923), and ''Haagsche Post'' (from 1923). In his first book, he was among the first to postulate a spiral structure for the Milky Way galaxy in which he located the solar system on the edge. A street in Dordrecht is named after him. ''NRC'', previously called ''NRC Handelsblad'' (), is a daily morning newspaper published in the Netherlands by NRC Media. It is generally accepted as a newspaper of record in the Netherlands. History ''NRC Handelsblad'' was first published on 1 October 1970 after a merger of the Amsterdam newspaper ''Algemeen Handelsblad'' (founded 1828 by J.W. van den Biesen) and the Rotterdam '' Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant'' (founded 1844 by Henricus Nijgh). The paper's motto is ''Lux et Libertas'' – Light (referring to the Age of Enlightenment) and Freedom. Editor was succeeded on 12 December 2006, by . After a dispute with the new owners Donker had to step down on 26 April 2010 and was replaced by Belgian . In 2019, he was succeeded by René Moerland. Antonie Pannekoek
Antonie “Anton” Pannekoek (; 2 January 1873 – 28 April 1960) was a Dutch astronomer, philosopher, Marxist theory, Marxist theorist, and socialist revolutionary. He was one of the main theorists of council communism (Dutch: ''radencommunisme''). Biography Pannekoek studied mathematics and physics in Leiden from 1891. Even before he went to college he was interested in astronomy and studied the Milky Way and variability of Polaris. He published his first article, ''On the Necessity of Further Researches on the Milky Way'', as a student. He briefly worked as a geodesist before he returned to the Leiden Observatory (''Leidse Sterrewacht'') to work as an observer and write his thesis on the variability of Algol. After reading Edward Bellamy's ''Equality (novel), Equality'', Pannekoek became a convinced socialism, socialist and started studying the philosophies of Karl Marx and Joseph Dietzgen.
