Corn Uí Riada
Corn Uí Riada is the premier sean-nós singing competition at Oireachtas na Gaeilge, an annually held arts festival of Irish culture. It is named in honour of the composer and founder of the legendary male choir Cór Chúil Aodha, Seán Ó Riada. A Cóisir Uí Riada is held whilst tuning into the broadcast of Corn Uí Riada, on the internet. Sean-nós Singing
Sean-nós singing ( , ; Irish for "old style") is unaccompanied traditional Irish vocal music usually performed in the Irish language. Sean-nós singing usually involves very long melodic phrases with highly ornamented and melismatic melodic lines, differing greatly from traditional folk singing elsewhere in Ireland, although there is significant regional variation within Ireland. Sean-nós songs cover a range of genres, from love song to lament to lullaby, traditionally with a strong focus on conveying the relevant emotion of the given song. The term ''sean-nós'', which simply means "in the old way", is a vague term that can also refer to various other traditional activities, musical and non-musical. Liam Lillis Ó Laoire
Liam is a short form of the Irish name Uilliam or the old Germanic name William. Etymology The original name was a merging of two Old German elements: ''willa'' ("will" or "resolution"); and ''helma'' ("helmet"). The juxtaposition of these elements effectively means "helmet of will" or "guardian". When the Frankish Empire was divided, the name developed differently in each region. Ciarán Ó Con Cheanainn
Ciarán Ó Con Cheanainn (12 July 1981 – 4 February 2009) Irish scholar, teacher and youngest winner of the Corn Uí Riada. Ó Con Cheanainn was born in Galway. He was the youngest winner of the prestigious sean-nós Corn Uí Riada singing competition at Oireachtas na Gaeilge, an annually held arts festival of Irish culture. He studied at NUI Galway, graduating in 2002 with first class honours in Irish and geography. In 2003 he was awarded an MA at UCD having completed his thesis, "Gnéithe de Sheachadadh na nAmhrán Traidisiúnta sa Ghaeilge." The following year he completed his thesis "Clár Amhrán Chois Fharraige", securing an M Litt in Modern Irish. The National University of Ireland in 2004 awarded him a travelling studentship in Celtic Studies, and he spent two years at Edinburgh University’s school of Scottish studies. Nan Tom Teaimín De Búrca
Nan Tom Teaimín de Búrca is an Irish traditional sean-nós singer. Biography Nan Tom Teaimín de Búrca (also given as Nan Tom Taimín) is from Connemara. She moved to London in 1978 but there was no market for her traditional singing there at the time. When de Búrca moved back to Ireland she came to Rusheenamanagh, near Carna, County Galway. Today she teaches sean-nós singing and is a tutor for the masters course in the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance which is part of the University of Limerick. She has won a number of awards for her singing, including the Corn Uí Riada in both 1998 and 2000, the most prestigious annual award for sean-nós singing. She also was awarded the TG4 Singer of the Year award in 2014.
