Corlea Trackway
__NOTOC__ The Corlea Trackway () is an Iron Age trackway, or ''togher'', near the village of Keenagh, south of Longford, County Longford, in Ireland. It was known locally as the ''Danes' Road''. It was constructed from oak planks in 148–147 BC, making it contemporary with the Siege of Carthage. The trackway is situated in an area which is the site of industrial-scale mechanised peat harvesting by the Bord na Móna, principally to supply the peat-fired power stations of the Electricity Supply Board. While today a generally flat and open landscape, in the Iron Age it was covered by bog, quicksand, and ponds, surround by dense woodlands of birch, willow, hazel and alder while higher ground was covered by oak and ash. Keenagh, County Longford
Keenagh or Kenagh () is a village in County Longford, Ireland. It is situated on the R397 road (Ireland), R397 near the Royal Canal of Ireland, Royal Canal. A small village with two churches, (Catholic and Church of Ireland), a couple of shops and three pubs, it lies south of Longford, Longford Town. There are also GAA and soccer clubs in the village, as well as a community centre. Corlea Trackway is an Iron Age trackway near the village. The Newcomen Baronets were the local landowners for several generations. In the period 2000 to 2007 many new houses were built around Keenagh, due to the tax incentives available in the area and without direct consideration to demand. As of 2010, many were vacant or incomplete constituting ghost estates. Between the 2002 and 2016 census, the population of Keenagh more than doubled from 225 to 581 inhabitants. Corduroy Road
A corduroy road or log road is a type of road or timber trackway made by placing logs, perpendicular to the direction of the road over a low or swampy area. The result is an improvement over impassable mud or dirt roads, yet rough in the best of conditions and a hazard to horses due to shifting loose logs. Barry Raftery
Barry Raftery (16 August 1944 – 22 August 2010) was an Irish archaeologist and academic. He is best known for his pioneering work in wetland archaeology and Iron Age hillforts in Ireland. He was Professor of Celtic Archaeology in University College Dublin (UCD) for more than thirty years, and served as chair of the Department of Celtic Archeology at UCD from 1996 to his retirement in 2007. Early life and education Barry Joseph Raftery was born in Dublin, Ireland on 16 August 1944. He was the son of an Irish father and German mother, Joseph and Lotte Raftery.
