Corigliano Calabro
Corigliano Calabro is a town and a ''frazione'' of Corigliano-Rossano located in the province of Cosenza, c. 40 km northeast of the city of Cosenza, in Calabria, southern Italy. Geography It is situated near the mouth of a river of the same name, and contains an aqueduct. On an eminence overlooking the town is a feudal castle with massive towers and a deep trench. In the ''comune'' are the ruins of the ancient city of Thurii, a former bishopric which remains a Latin titular see as Thurio. Nearby is Sibari, the site of the ancient city of Sybaris. History In 1879, it had a population of about 13,000. It had five churches, six convents, and a few public buildings. Corigliano-Rossano is a ''comune'' in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region of southern Italy. It was established on 31 March 2018 by the merger of Corigliano Calabro and Rossano. Etymology According to some interpretations, the toponym Corigliano derives from Latin ''Corellianum'', meaning "Corellio farm"; according to other hypotheses, the name could be traced back to that of other toponyms of Southern Italy such as Corigliano d'Otranto, and therefore from the Byzantine Greek term "χωρίον" (transliterated ''choríon''), respectively to the etymologically related term "χώρα" (''chóra''), with the meaning of ''village'', ''town'', ''farm'', ''land'' or ''place'', or ''oil village'', from Greek ''choríon elàion''. Enzo Corigliano (30 July 1997 – 12 December 2020) was a French male professional squash player. As of August 2018, he was ranked No. 136. in the world. Prior to arriving at St. Lawrence, Enzo captained the French National U15 and U17 Squash teams and was a member of the team that finished 2nd at the European Junior Team Championships. John Corigliano
John Paul Corigliano Jr. (born February 16, 1938) is an American composer of contemporary classical music. His scores, now numbering over one hundred, have won him the Pulitzer Prize, five Grammy Awards, Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, and an Oscar. He is a distinguished professor of music at Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and on the composition faculty at the Juilliard School. Corigliano is best known for his Symphony No. 1, a response to the AIDS epidemic, and his film score for François Girard's ''The Red Violin'' (1997), which he subsequently adapted as the 2003 Concerto for Violin and Orchestra ("The Red Violin") for Joshua Bell.
