Corey Black
Corey A. Black (born January 11, 1969, in Westminster, California) is a retired Champion jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. Born in Westminster, California, Black won his first race as a professional apprentice jockey on October 16, 1985, during the Oak Tree Racing Association meet at Santa Anita Park. A Champion that year, he led all apprentice jockeys in United States racing in purse money won. During a fifteen-year career, Black rode primarily in California where he won important races, including the 1993 Hollywood Gold Cup aboard Best Pal. In the summer of 1987, and again in 1992, Corey Black rode in France where he won a number of conditions races. Like many in his profession, Corey Black battled weight gain that eventually was a factor in his retirement at age thirty-one on November 26, 2000. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. The Groupie Doll Stakes (known as the 'Gardenia Stakes / Gardenia Handicap' until 2015) is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early August at Ellis Park Race Course in Henderson, Kentucky. The event is open to three-year-olds & up fillies and mares. It is run at one mile ( 8 furlongs) on a conventional dirt surface. The race itself was initially named for the flower used in the winner's garland. The race is now named after the 2011 winner; Groupie Doll. The race was first run in 1982. Best Pal (February 12, 1988 – November 24, 1998) was an American Hall of Fame champion racehorse, who retired as the all time record for purses of any California-bred earning (since surpassed) for his owners, the Golden Eagle Farm, US$5.6 million over his lifetime. Background Best Pal was a brown gelding bred by John & Betty Mabee. Best Pal was a descendant of Princequillo on both his sire's and dam's line. He was gelded at an early age due to being "studdish and unmanageable". Prix Berteux
The Prix Berteux was a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It was run at various tracks over a distance of 3,000 metres (about 1⅞ miles), and it was scheduled to take place each year in June or July. History During the 19th century, the event was staged at Longchamp as the Prix de la Néva. It usually took place on the day before the Grand Prix de Paris. For a period it was contested over 2,900 metres, and it was extended to 3,000 metres in 1889. The race continued as the Prix de la Néva until 1913. The Hong Kong Mile is a Group 1 flat horse race in Hong Kong which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile) at Sha Tin, and it is scheduled to take place each year in mid December. San Vicente Stakes
The San Vicente Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse race run annually at Santa Anita Park. A Grade II event, the race is open to three-year-old horses willing to race seven furlongs on the dirt and currently carries a purse of $200,000. History Inaugurated in 1935 as the San Vicente Handicap, it was open to older horses until 1937.
