The Corazon de Trinidad is a historic district (United States), historic district in Trinidad, Colorado which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The district is a area roughly bounded by the Purgatoire River on the north and west, Walnut St. on the east, and 3rd, W. 1st and Animas Sts. on the south. (138-page PDF). Purgatoire River
The Purgatoire River ( es, Río Purgatorio) is a river in southeastern Colorado, United States. The river is also known locally as the Purgatory River or the Picketwire River. ''Purgatoire'' means Purgatory in French. French trappers named the river to commemorate Spanish explorers killed in a Native American attack. Trinidad, Colorado
Trinidad is the home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,329 as of the 2020 census. Trinidad lies north of Raton, New Mexico, and south of Denver. It is on the historic Santa Fe Trail. History Early Trinidad was first explored by Spanish and Mexican traders, who liked its proximity to the Santa Fe Trail. It was founded in 1862 soon after coal was discovered in the region. This led to an influx of immigrants eager to capitalize on this natural resource. By the late 1860s, the town had about 1,200 residents. Trinidad was officially incorporated in 1876, just a few months before Colorado became a state. In the law regulating historic districts in the United States, a contributing property or contributing resource is any building, object, or structure which adds to the historical integrity or architectural qualities that make the historic district significant. Government agencies, at the state, national, and local level in the United States, have differing definitions of what constitutes a contributing property but there are common characteristics. Local laws often regulate the changes that can be made to contributing structures within designated historic districts. Jaffa Opera House
The Jaffa Opera House, at 100–116 W. Main St. in Trinidad, Colorado, was built in 1883. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is Italianate, in fact High Victorian Italianate, in style. The first floor provided commercial spaces; the second floor provided a 710-seat opera house with a stage and a proscenium. With When listed in 1972, the main commercial space had been Hausman Drug Store for many years. Photo in 2012 and Google Streetview dated May 2018 show it apparently vacant. It was damaged in an earthquake measured at 3.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, and some experts recommended its demolition in 2011, but a community coalesced in opposition to that. Richardsonian Romanesque Architecture
Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886). The revival style incorporates 11th and 12th century southern French, Spanish, and Italian Romanesque characteristics. Richardson first used elements of the style in his Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, New York, designed in 1870. Trinidad Sandstone
The Trinidad Sandstone is a geologic formation in northeastern New Mexico and southeastern Colorado. It was formed during the Campanian Age of the Cretaceous Period and contains fossils. Description The Trinidad Formation consists of a massive fine- to very fine-grained arkosic sandstone some in thickness. It rests conformably on the Pierre Shale and is in turn conformably overlain by the Vermejo Formation. The formation is interpreted as shore deposits marking the final regression of the Western Interior Seaway from northeastern New Mexico. It is correlative with the Fox Hills Sandstone and the Pictured Cliffs Sandstone. Fossils The formation contains trace fossils of '' Ophiomorpha'' and, in a few locations, '' Diplocraterion''.
