You Am I
You Am I are an Australian alternative rock band, fronted by its lead singer-songwriter and guitarist, Tim Rogers. They formed in December 1989 and are the first Australian band to have released three successive albums that have each debuted at the number-one position on the ARIA Albums Chart: ''Hi Fi Way'' (February 1995), '' Hourly, Daily'' (July 1996) and '' #4 Record'' (April 1998). Nine of their tracks appeared on the related ARIA Singles Chart top 50 with "What I Don't Know 'bout You" (February 1998), their highest charting, at No. 28. You Am I have received ten ARIA Music Awards from thirty-one nominations. The band have supported international artists such as the Who, the Rolling Stones, Sonic Youth and Oasis. Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a category of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Grunge
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is an alternative rock genre and subculture that emerged during the in the American Pacific Northwest state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. Grunge fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal, but without punk's structure and speed. The genre featured the distorted electric guitar sound used in both genres, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Like these genres, grunge typically uses electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals. Grunge also incorporates influences from indie rock bands such as Sonic Youth. Lyrics are typically angst-filled and introspective, often addressing themes such as social alienation, self-doubt, abuse, neglect, betrayal, social and emotional isolation, addiction, psychological trauma and a desire for freedom. RooArt Records
rooArt was an Australian independent record label, founded in 1988 by INXS's then-manager, Chris Murphy. The label's roster included several well-known Australian bands and artists such as Crow, Ratcat, Screaming Jets, You Am I, Wendy Matthews, The Hummingbirds, The Trilobites and Amanda Brown. Other bands which made early or first releases on the rooArt label included Hipslingers, The Last Metro, The Lab, The Fauves, Bellicose and Custard. rooArt released a series of three compilation albums of new or then-unsigned acts, called ''Youngblood''. A number of acts released on the compilations went on to record their own albums, including Tall Tales and True, The Trilobites and Martha’s Vineyard. ''Sound as Ever'' is the debut album by Australian band You Am I, released in October 1993 via rooArt Records.McFarlane'You Am I'entry. Archived frothe originalon 29 August 2004. It was recorded at Pachyderm Studio in rural Cannon Falls, Minnesota, over eight days from July to August 1993 and was produced by Lee Ranaldo, ( Sonic Youth) with Wayne Connolly as mixer and audio engineer. It provided three singles, " Adam's Ribs" (October 1993), "Berlin Chair" (February 1994) and " Jaimme's Got a Gal" (May). Tim Rogers (musician)
Timothy Adrian Rogers (born 20 September 1969), known professionally as Tim Rogers, is an Australian musician, actor and writer, best known as the frontman of Australian rock band You Am I. He has also recorded solo albums with backing bands. As of July 2013, Rogers has released 12 albums with You Am I and five solo albums. Early life Born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Rogers moved between towns multiple times during his adolescence, including Adelaide and Canberra. Following his primary school years in Applecross, a suburb of Perth, Rogers later became school captain at Sydney school Oakhill College. Rogers studied law at the Australian National University in Canberra, aged 18, though did not complete a degree. While at ANU, Rogers lived at Toad Hall residential accommodation, and worked part-time at Canberra Theatre. Andrew Charles Kent (born 1969) is the bass player for Australian rock band You Am I.Spencer et al, (2007Kent, Andyentry. Retrieved 3 February 2010.Spencer et al, (2007You Am Ientry. Retrieved 4 February 2010. Biography Andy Kent was born in Wellington, New Zealand. He joined You Am I in late 1991. At the age of twenty-two, he replaced Nick Tischler, and joined Tim Rogers with new drummer Mark Tunaley (who had replaced Rogers' brother Jaimme). Kent was the band's live sound engineer prior to being asked to join the band at a performance in Canberra. Kent's first recorded appearance with the band was on their '' Goddamn'' EP in 1992. Tuanaley later left the band after the release of their first album, '' Sound As Ever'', and was replaced by Rusty Hopkinson. During the band commentary on '' The Cream and the Crock'' DVD, Tim and Andy mention that Kent was originally going to be the guitarist in You Am I, because of his level of proficiency.
