Cooperative Congressional Election Study
The Cooperative Election Study (abbreviated CCS) (formerly the Cooperative Congressional Election Study) is a national online survey conducted before and after United States presidential and midterm elections. Originally designed by Stephen Ansolabehere of Harvard University, it was originally fielded in 2006 by the Palo Alto, California-based company Polimetrix, Inc., with help from 39 different American universities. Stephen Ansolabehere
Stephen Daniel Ansolabehere is a professor of government at Harvard University. He is the younger brother of animator Joe Ansolabehere. Education Ansolabehere received his B.A. in political science and B.S. in economics from the University of Minnesota in 1984, and his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard in 1989. Career From 1989 to 1993, Ansolabehere served as an assistant professor in the University of California, Los Angeles' department of political science. He became an associate professor of political science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995, and Elting R. Morison Professor of Political Science there in 1998. He held this position from 1998 until joining the faculty of Harvard in 2008. United States Elections, 2006
The 2006 United States elections were held on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, in the middle of Republican President George W. Bush's second term. Democrats won control of both houses of Congress, which was the first and only time either party did so since the 1994 elections. These elections were widely categorized as a Democratic wave. In the Senate, Democrats won a net gain of six seats to take a narrow majority in that chamber. Democrats picked up 31 seats in the House of Representatives, and after the election Nancy Pelosi became the first female Speaker of the House. In the gubernatorial elections, Democrats won a net gain of six seats. Nationwide, Republicans failed to win any congressional or gubernatorial seat that was held by a Democrat going into the election.
