''Cool as Fuck'' (printed on the sleeve as ''Cool as ****'') is a 1990 5 track EP by the Manchester baggy group Inspiral Carpets. It is also a slogan featured on a series of the band's tee-shirts, that were reputed to have sold more copies than their albums, combined. It was released as a 12" LP, a CD and a cassette. The cassette had all 5 songs on both sides. The EP was only released in the US. Inspiral Carpets
Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band, part of the late-1980s/early-1990s Madchester movement. Formed in Oldham in 1980, the band's most successful lineup featured frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh and keyboardist Clint Boon. Several line-ups were loosely used from 1980 until Lambert and singer Stephen Holt met at The Moor End indie disco in Oldham 1983. Holt sang on the first two independent singles. Holt departed the band before they signed with Mute Records,Thompson, Dave (2000) ''Alternative Rock'', Miller Freeman, , p.425-427 Inspiral Carpets was known for using organs and distorted guitars with influences from psychedelic rock. Madchester was a musical and cultural scene that developed in the English city of Manchester in the late 1980s, closely associated with the indie dance scene. Baggy was a name given to a British alternative dance genre popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with many of the artists referred to as "baggy" being bands from the Madchester scene. History The genesis of indie-dance was the Balearic beat scene (where there were DJs playing an eclectic mix of records including such rock/dance crossovers like "Jesus on the Payroll" by Thrashing Doves and producers like Paul Oakenfold) and the indie music scene in the north west of England, which featured Tony Wilson's Factory Records and former post-punk band the Stone Roses in Manchester. Even though they were not signed to Factory Records, instead signing to Paul Birch's Revolver Records in Wolverhampton (before taking a deal with Jive Records' Silvertone), the band did have links to Tony Wilson, Martin Hannett and Peter Hook, with the New Order bassist scheduled to produce their debut album, before John Leckie took over. "Joe" is a single by British rock music, rock band Inspiral Carpets, released in 1989. Written in 1985, it was first song recorded on New Year's Eve 1987 as part of the demo album ''Dung 4'', which was released in May 1989. The original version was written by Clint Boon and sung by Stephen Holt, but when Tom Hingley joined the band in 1988, it was modified. The modified version, issued on the "Joe" 12" in 1989 became the standard, and it was still played even after Holt rejoined the band. Music video A music video for the song was filmed by an unknown avantgardist in 1990. It features shots of a homeless man and footage of a British cities including London (including St Paul's Cathedral and Christ Church, Spitalfields) mixed with shots of many-coloured lines running up and down the screen, filmed with a blue filter. "Find Out Why" is a single by the British punk rock and progressive rock group Inspiral Carpets. It was released in August 1989 and contains the 16-minute epic "Plane Crash" as a B-side. In 1990, it was re-released in the US as the ''Cool as Fuck'' EP, with the tracks "Joe" and "Out of Time" as bonus songs. The EP used a modified version of the artwork for the single, with the art a different shade of green and the title and logo overlaid. In 1990, the track was rewritten as the theme tune to '' The 8:15 from Manchester''. B-sides The 7" version does not contain the B-side "Plane Crash". The track was recorded live to 2 inch tape in one take.
