Gwynneth "Gwyn" Coogan (born Gwynneth Hardesty; August 21, 1965 in Trenton, New Jersey) is an American former Olympic athlete, educator and mathematician. Hardesty attended Phillips Exeter Academy for two years, where she played squash and field hockey. She then attended Smith College, graduating in 1987, where she majored in math and took up running for the first time, and became the two-time NCAA Division III champion in the 3,000 meters. She qualified for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where she competed in the 10,000 meters. Four years later, she was an alternate for the women's marathon for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She was the 1998 United States National Champion in the Marathon. Mark J. Coogan (born May 1, 1966, Manhasset, New York, United States) is an American coach and retired American track athlete. Running career He attended Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and the University of Maryland, College Park. Coogan was coached at the University of Maryland by Charles Florence Torpey, who headed the Men's and Women's running teams at La Salle University until his untimely death. While in college, Coogan specialized in the steeplechase. Coogan was the first Massachusetts native to run the mile in under four minutes. In March 1995, at the Pan-American Games (Mar del Plata, Argentina), Coogan earned the silver medal in the Marathon, in a time of 2:15:21. Career Born in Madison, New Jersey, Coogan worked in radio for some time, including appearing as Abie Levy in ''Abie's Irish Rose''. He appeared on Broadway in five different productions between 1945 and 1955, all of them short-lived except for ''Diamond Lil'' with Mae West, and '' The Rainmaker''.
