Conwil Railway Station
Conwil was a railway station near the village of Cynwyl Elfed in Carmarthenshire, Wales, serving the hamlet and the rural locale. It was once a thriving railway station, transporting both passenger traffic and locally produced goods, including wool, livestock, milk and timber. History The Teifi Valley Railway was originally operated by the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway between Carmarthen and Cynwyl Elfed. In 1864, the line was extended to Pencader and Llandysul. The line was purchased by the Great Western Railway (GWR). Although passenger services ceased in 1965, goods services continued until 1973 because of the milk train services to the Co-operative Group creamery at Newcastle Emlyn. As of 2012 the station and platforms still survive. The Gwili Railway or Rheilffordd Ager y Gwili A group of railway enthusiasts bought eight miles of the old trackbed. Cynwyl Elfed
Cynwyl Elfed (; sometimes Conwyl and formerly anglicised as Conwil Elvet or Conwil in Elvet) is a village and community in the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. The community includes the villages of Cynwyl Elfed, Blaenycoed and Cwmduad. It is situated about north of Carmarthen and had a population of 953 in 2001, increasing to 1,044 at the 2011 Census. The area around the village has yielded a significant number of Roman artefacts, including a statue of Diana. It was the most important centre of the commote of Elfed in the Middle Ages. Cynwyl Elfed transmitting station stands on high ground to the north of the village. Governance An electoral ward of the same name exists. This ward stretches south to Newchurch and Merthyr. There is a community council of the same name and also the ward is represented by one councillor in Carmarthenshire County Council. Creamery
A creamery is a place where milk and cream are processed and where butter and cheese is produced. Cream is separated from whole milk; pasteurization is done to the skimmed milk and cream separately. Whole milk for sale has had some cream returned to the skimmed milk. The creamery is the source of butter from a dairy. Cream is an emulsion of fat-in-water; the process of churning causes a phase inversion to butter which is an emulsion of water-in-fat. Excess liquid as buttermilk is drained off in the process. Danycoed Halt Railway Station
Danycoed Halt, which is Welsh for below the trees, was built by the Gwili Railway in the late 1990s and opened in 2001. It is the current northern terminus of the line, but may become redundant when the preserved railway extends over a mile northwards into the nearby Conwyl station site and then further on up to Llanpumpsaint Station some 2½ miles further on. The halt (along with a nearby "Llwyfan Cerrig" station) did not exist in British Railways days and currently features a four-coach platform, a typical GWR storage hut and other station furniture such as lamp posts and benches. Llanpumpsaint was a railway station near the village of Llanpumpsaint, West Wales, serving the hamlet and the rural locale. History The Teifi Valley Railway was originally operated by the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway between Carmarthen and Cynwyl Elfed. In 1864, the line was extended to Pencader and Llandysul. The line was purchased by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and extended to a terminus at Newcastle Emlyn in 1895. Bronwydd Arms Railway Station
Bronwydd Arms railway station, originally a stop on the now closed Carmarthen to Aberystwyth Line, is the headquarters of the preserved Gwili Railway. The station first opened on 3 September 1860 as part of the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway and closed to passengers on 22 February 1965. Following closure, the station building and signal box were demolished, leaving behind only a bare platform. In 1978, the Gwili Railway re-opened the station and gradually rebuilt the station building and signal box using redundant buildings recovered from the Heart of Wales Line. The station building was constructed from Llandovery signal box, clad with components from Ammanford (GWR) railway station, while the signal box from Llandybie was also recovered and is now used as the 'new' Bronwydd Arms signal box.
