Continental Croatia
Continental Croatia () was one of the two NUTS-2 Regions of Croatia between 2013 and 2021.https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/documents/345175/7451602/NUTS2-changes-2016-to-2021.pdf The region formed the continental part of the country. The most populated cities in the region were Zagreb, Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Karlovac, Sisak and Varaždin. It accounted for 56% of the country's territory and 67% of the population. The existence of this large region that included the capital city of Zagreb was controversial in Croatia at the time, with public complaints on how it enabled an unjust distribution of European Union funding. In 2021, it was replaced with three NUTS-2 regions: City of Zagreb, Northern Croatia and Pannonian Croatia. Subdivisions Of Croatia
The subdivisions of Croatia on the first level are the 20 counties (''županija'', pl. ''županije'') and one city-county ('' grad'', "city"). On the second level these are municipalities ('' općina'', pl. ''općine'') and cities (''grad'', pl. ''gradovi''). Both of these types of subdivisions encompass one or multiple settlements (''naselje'', pl. ''naselja'') which are not public or legal entities, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics consider them as non-administrative units – human settlements, similar to the United States census designated places. Croatia (HR) is included in the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) of the European Union. The NUTS of Croatia were defined during the Accession of Croatia to the European Union, codified by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics in early 2007. Pannonian Croatia () is one of the four NUTS-2 Regions of Croatia since 2021. The region is located in the continental part of the country, including eight counties of Croatia. The most populated cities in the region are Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Karlovac and Sisak. It accounts for 41% of the country's territory and 26% of the population. Pannonian Croatia is the poorest NUTS-2 region in Croatia with GDP PPS per capita at 40% of EU-27 average. Northern Croatia
Northern Croatia or North Croatia ( hr, Sjeverna Hrvatska, ) refers to the northern parts of Croatia, encompassing Zagreb, Varaždin, Međimurje, Zagorje and Koprivnica-Križevci counties, including the cities of Zagreb, Varaždin, Čakovec, Krapina, Koprivnica and Križevci. The region is home to the Kajkavian dialect. The region borders Hungary to its north-east and Slovenia to its north-west. Status The term had not been used in official capacity until recently. Until 2012, the region's borders coincided with the NUTS-2 region ''Northwest Croatia'' (''Sjeverozapadna Hrvatska'' in Croatian). Zagreb ( , , , ) is the capital and largest city of Croatia. It is in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics or NUTS (french: Nomenclature des unités territoriales statistiques) is a geocode standard for referencing the subdivisions of countries for statistical purposes. The standard, adopted in 2003, is developed and regulated by the European Union, and thus only covers the member states of the EU in detail. Sisak
Sisak (; hu, Sziszek ; also known by other alternative names) is a city in central Croatia, spanning the confluence of the Kupa, Sava and Odra rivers, southeast of the Croatian capital Zagreb, and is usually considered to be where the Posavina (Sava basin) begins, with an elevation of 99 m. The city's total population in 2011 was 47,768 of which 33,322 live in the urban settlement (naselje).
